Art Safari’s creative adventures out of Africa to Turkey
Istanbul with James Willis
21st to 27th October 2013 tour completed
Sketch in the autumnal warmth of Istanbul, an enchanting city which is a grand fusion of East and West with guest tutor James Willis. James teaches by example and is a senior tutor at the Open College of Arts. You may recognise him as a frequent contributor to The Artist magazine
Staying in the heart of the Sultanahmet daily explorations on foot and by tram take us to sketch the riches of Istanbul’s culture. We paint in the stately palace grounds of Topkapi Sarayi (Topkapi Palace), Hagia Sophia, the imposing Byzantine church and the dreamy minarets and cascading domes of Sultanahmet Camii (Blue Mosque).
There will be time to sketch and shop in the Misir Carisi (Egyptian Spice Market) and Kapali Carsisi (the Grand Bazaar). Both are bursting with stalls, vibrant with colour and energy, overflowing with the smells and tastes of spices and Turkish delight. Colourful ceramics, jewellery and carpets make tantalising images.
You can look forward to delicious food; colourful mezzes and traditional kebabs, figs, pomegranates, followed by pistachio-laden Turkish delight dusted with coconut!
