Art Safari creative adventures ‘out of Africa’ to The Arctic
Life on the Ice (North)
10 days around the Spitzbergen archipelago on an expedition cruise + extra days in Longyearbyen on request
1st – 10th July 2012
This Spitzbergen explorer Art Safari voyage on the 100 berth Plancius takes us into the Arctic Circle to 80 degrees North around the island of Spitzbergen/Svalbard on the edge of the ice-cap. The islands draw wildlife for the breeding season, and we have many chances to see and draw in truly awe-inspiring environments. Snow-draped mountains rise high above the pack ice. Stillness and silence.
It is the wildlife that makes this adventurous expedition so intoxicating: huge 200,000 strong colonies of little auks thronging the cliffs and shores, kittiwakes next to the cobalt blue glaciers, walrus wallowing in the shallows, Arctic foxes, whales, and the Polar bear is frequently seen hunting on the ice floes.
With 24hr daylight, we will make the most of our time amid this breath-taking glacial scenery, leaving our comfortable ship for excursions on zodiacs and on foot or enjoying the views from the decks.
We have plenty of time to sketch and paint both on land and on board ship – it’s summer and it’s not too cold to paint in great comfort!
Non painters are most welcome to join our voyage – there are Polar experts on board who are happy to impart knowledge on all Arctic subjects.
Your Arctic safari includes:
- 8 nights onboard, exploring the incredible archipelago of Svalbard (Spitzbergen) and into the Arctic circle
- Optional extra nights on Svalbard at Longyearbyen
We are happy to arrange your flights for you but offer you the option of sourcing them yourself. We can also offer advice on your personal travel insurance.
Further information about what art materials and clothing to take with you, medical and insurance requirements etc will be given to you later. We are also able to send you to the Arctic and Antarctic on other voyages, please let us know when you would like to travel.
