Art Safari’s creative adventures out of Africa to Italy
With James Willis
3rd - 9th September 2014 - tour completed
Sketch and paint magical Venice during Regata Storica (Historical Regatta). This traditional Venetian Regatta starts with a colourful procession on the water, then to the delight of spectators teams of gondoliers race a course along the Grand Canal. The racing is accompanied by much fanfare with bright colourful costumes and music adding to the carnival atmosphere.
In Venice you will capture some of the glorious architecture, dancing with the watery reflective light of the canals. We stay in the heart of this fascinating city so that we can meander the streets and take water taxis to our painting destinations.
James Willis leads this tour with guidance, demonstrations and one-to-one tuition. James is well known for his large views of Italian cities and as a tutor at the Sir John Soane Museum.
We explore on foot and water taxis but principally with pencil and brush, exploring line, colour and reflection.
We tackle ornate buildings and churches with confidence, choosing San Giorgio, Salute, Redentore, San Trovaso, or San Raphaelo. As we venture out we will stop to sketch canals, bridges, squares and bustling market places – such as the fish market at Rialto, where we will arrive early in the morning when the deliveries start!
You will come back with a vibrant sketchbook, superb memories and some wonderful material to work with during the autumn and winter months.
Tour cost: from £1850 per person sharing excluding flights
