Art Safari’s creative adventures to Japan

Floating Landscapes

10 – 22 November 2014 tour in progress

with Mary-Anne Bartlett

 Avi Kiyumizu-Roofs

Mount Fuji floats high above the surrounding lands, its mysterious presence dominates the landscape and our pictorial knowledge of Japan.  It is a view that captures the imagination.  We will be painting there.

Art Safari travels to Japan during the ‘autumn-leaves-viewing’ months when the skies are clear and bright and when we’re most likely to get that classic view so that we can paint Mount Fuji and other in our own way.

Geisha AviExploring some of the beautiful areas of Japan, we paint in the valleys coloured in the pinks, reds, oranges and browns of the late autumn.  This is an idyllic time to visit Japan, entrancing colour surrounding the temples, pavilions and palaces.  We visit Shogun’s castles and sacred sites, mountain villages and picturesque towns to discover the heart of traditional Japan.

One of the natural wonders of Japan is to see the wild snow monkeys enjoying bathing in hot springs, and we have time to observe and sketch them.  There will be other opportunities for wildlife, though our main focus is culture and architecture.

Influenced by Japanese art and simplicity since she visited the Great Japan Exhibition at the Royal Academy in London in the 1980s, Mary-Anne Bartlett is delighted to be leading this new tour.

This fascinating itinerary combines a small amount of wildlife with a large dose of wildly colourful landscape, silk kimonos and fascinating architecture.  We will also meet contemporary Japanese artists.

This is our first tour to Japan.
