Kingdom of the Rhino

Tour completed

This is a tour of wonderful wildlife experiences and varied landscape, majestic mountains, valleys, gorges, waterfalls and African Bush.

It is also renowned for sightings of rhino.

Swaziland is a small country with a big heart!  We stay in three national parks, minimising internal travel and spending all our time with wildlife and nature.

In the landlocked kingdom we explore superb scenery, including staggering mountains and wildlife filled savannah.  We concentrate on  Mlilwane Winldlife Sanctuary, Hlana Royal National Park and Mkaya Game Reserve, protected nature reserves and parks which offer superb wildlife watching and painting opportunities in beautiful landscapes. We will return with sketchbooks full of elephants buffalo, rhino, elephants, warthogs, antelopes and lions!

The variation of landscape and habitat supports a wonderful variety of birdlife, find rare blue swallows in the highveld and vulture colonies in the lowveld.  The parks we visit are also breeding areas for endangered species, such as small antelope (suni, duiker, steenbok), nyala antelope, black and southern white rhino, roan antelope, Nguni cattle and crested guineafowl.

Painting and sketching times are, as always, happy and intense, and take place out in the fresh air, with views and wildlife.  Sometimes we paint at the lodges as the wildlife is so very close to us, whilst at other times we drive a short distance to a vantage point or to where we find animals. Stretching time around our painting sessions, we also have opportunities for walks, game drives, village visits and horse-riding.  This makes it a trip that is ideal for non-painting partners who might like to go off to do other things now and again.

The friendly laid-back Swazi people are are excellent hosts and rightly proud of their rich cultural heritage.  Traditional attire, ceremonies and dancing are to be found throughout the country all year through.

We’ll stay in lodges that offer spectacular views, relishing in the brilliance of good old-fashioned African hospitality and comfort.  Art filled days of exploration are followed by evenings relaxing and reflecting in sumptuous surroundings.  Please contact us to find out more about this safari.
