Art Safari creative adventures in Central America

Pura Vida

24 November – 8 December  2018

with Darren Rees

A brand new Art Safari to Central America with artist Darren Rees, our Costa Rican itinerary is vibrant with tropical colours, culture and nature.  We sketch our way through landscapes of cloud forest and rain forest, volcanos and coffee plantations, rivers and mangroves, beaches and waterfalls.

The Costa Rican greeting is ‘pura vida’ – the pure life and Latin American rhythms pulsate in the Central Valley.

In bustling San Jose we visit Museo del Oro, the Pre-Columbian gold museum where exquisite artworks, amulets, statues and animal figurines offer a sense of place and history.

As an experienced nature guide Darren is passionate about wildlife, this is his first trip to Costa Rica and his enthusiam is sure to be contagious!  Our Costa Rican local guide will work with Darren to give us the best possible wildlife painting opportunities, explaining the biodiversity of locations we visit.

Sketchbooks will fill with colourful images of toucans, iridescent humming birds and butterflies, turtles, poison dart frogs and sloth.

Darren will encourage you to hone your observational skills, to capture birds and animals in fast lines and colour washes, to compose longer studies, sweeping landscapes.  Mix many shades of lush green for forest visits, gigantic ferns bow and glisten with water droplets, vines twist and trail from the tree canopy – remember to look down occasionally for columns of industrious leaf cutter ants.

Hotel gardens are a treasure chest of tropical plants and stunning orchids, a riot of colour attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.

Tour highlights include:

The Tortuguero National Park on the Northern Caribbean coast – vital for the conservation of Green Sea Turtles, Leatherback and Hawksbill turtles which nest on the beaches from July to October

Arenal Volcano, rainforest sketching walks, butterflies, hummingbirds and toucans – with time to laze in volcanic hot springs

The Central Pacific – drifting through mangroves with sketchbooks and binoculars for close-ups of king fishers, Scarlett macaws, herons, troops of acrobatic monkeys,  turtles and basking crocodiles

Coffee plantation tour and tasting

Expect warm ‘Tico’ welcomes and hospitality, with delicious food in wonderful locations.
