Art Safari creative adventures out of Africa to Greece
12 – 18 May 2016
with Karen Pearson
This Art Safari in Crete is timed for wild flowers and cooler temperatures.
Paint white washed villages clinging to rugged hillsides, colourful fishing boats and ancient olive groves with the friendly guidance of art tutor Karen Pearson. Karen loves the Greek landscape, architecture and colour, she will guide you with demonstrations, one-to-one tuition and colour workshops on Art Safari at this lovely time of year.
Sketching rugged mountains, white washed villages, monasteries, gorges, olive groves and bobbing fishing boats this is an area full of resonance. You can expect to paint landscapes filled with flowers while you breathe in the scent of wild herbs on Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands and the southernmost island in Europe.
Satisfying days of painting and exploration will be followed by refelective suppers in good company, relaxing at a Taverna sampling local delicacies, mezzes and freshly caught seafood.
Crete was the cradle of Minoan civilization from 2600-1150 BC, ruined Minoan palaces and sacred sites await discovery, as well as Mosaics and monuments a legacy of the Roman invasion from 69-330 AC. We have time to reflect on this island steeped in Greek mythology: the birthplace of Zeus is in a mountain cave here and the enormous labyrinth in Knossos the monster Minotaur awaited blood tributes from Athens.
We are based in Makrigialos, a fishing village on the south coast of the Island.
Our group will be staying in pretty beach front studios and our accommodation has beachside views of the crystal clear Libyan Sea.
Our stay is on a ‘self-catering’ basis, there are shops within easy reach for provisions, though realistically we eat at cafes and taverns savouring local produce, delicious cheeses, cold cuts, olive oils, herbs, honey, wine and traditional Cretan dishes.
Karen knows the area and has some favorite locations she is looking forward to sharing with you on this tour.
This promises to be a fun and relaxing holiday, with plenty of artwork and time for exploration.
