|Art Safari’s creative adventures – a painting holiday in Norway in 2017
Painting Fjords in the midnight sun
2 – 7 July 2017
Visit Norway in the Arctic summer for nature and culture with artist tutor Karen Pearson.
Our base for this Art Safari is Kvaløya, a large island with many fjords and mountains, we are staying at a wonderfully peaceful waterfront farmstead, surrounded by wilderness, approximately 50 minutes from Tromso.
Sketch breathtaking landscapes and wildlife, and experience the strangeness of 24 hour daylight with intense rosie hues in the sky at night. The air here is so very clear, the fjords sparkle and the hills and mountains are lush and green.
“Night was coming on again; the sun just dipped into the sea and rose again, red, refreshed, as if it had been down to drink. I could feel more strangely on those nights than anyone would believe” Knut Hamsuns (1894)
Beside the water we look out for otters, seals, porpoises and magnificent white tailed eagles and shags feeding in the fjords. Each day Karen will follow local advice to seek out the best wildlife viewing opportunities on countryside walks for you.
There is so much to paint here. Small wooden-clad summer houses and boat sheds poise perfectly in birch woods and on fjords for the focus of your landscape paintings.
Summertime in this Arctic region is a 24 hour party, Norwegians relish the warmth and wondrous light. We visit Tromso where cafes spill out on to pavements and we can find somewhere to sit and sketch moments of every day life.
At the end of Tromso bridge, in front of Tromsdalstind mountain, stands the iconic ‘Arctic Cathedral’. Behind the alter a vast glass mosaic created by Victor Sparre in 1972 becomes hardly discernible during the darkness of winter, it is at its most spectacular during the summer months, when bathed in the rays of the midnight sun.
It’s a time for Arctic flowers. We will spend some time sketching at Tromso Arctic-Alpine Botanical Gardens, the most Northerly Botanical Gardens in the World, in July the spectacular blue Tibetan Poppy (Meconopsis) should be coming in to bloom. Paint intriguing species of cold-loving plants that grow north of the polar tree line, in the rocky landscape of the Arctic section of the gardens .
At the farmstead we have timber cabins each containing 2 double bedrooms with a shared cloakroom/toilet. The kitchen, large open plan dining room/sitting room (which will become our art studio) and shower are in the main house next door. The sitting room windows are huge with panoramic views of the sea and mountains.
