Autumn Aurora

26 September to 01 October 2019

with Karen Pearson

An autumnal short art break to the Arctic, painting on a glorious fjord in Norway where long sunrises and sunsets fill the sky with orange, mauve and scarlet nearly every day.

At this time of year, as the nights begin to darken, there’s a good chance of seeing the glowing Aurora dance across the skies in luminous green bands in a quite simply breath-taking show.  So, we hope you’ll be sketching beautiful autumnal landscapes by day and the spectacular northern lights by night!

Our base for this Art Safari is a peaceful waterfront farmstead on Kvaløya island surrounded by beautiful north Norwegian wilderness, approximately 50 minutes from Tromso.  We have a light airy studio space at the Farmstead to work on our sketches, which enjoys panoramic views of the sea and mountains.

Artist tutor Karen Pearson will lead sketching walks from the Farmstead, stopping for studies of flowering alpines, fungi and wildlife – look out for eagles overhead and otters in the shallows.  We will also spend time painting at a hillside cabin with incredible views of the fjords backed by snow-capped mountains, and take you to visit local art studios showing paintings, glass and ceramics.

On one of the days, we will take a trip into Tromso to some of Karen’s favourite sketching spots including the Arctic-Alpine Botanical Gardens, and if visibility is clear we can take the cable car up Mount Storsteinen to the viewing platform for a spectacular panorama of Tromsø and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords.

Karen will cover techniques for mixing rich autumnal colours, and painting the fjords, vast stretches of water and reflections.  On shoreline expeditions you will tackle watery subjects, flotsam and jetsam and fishing boats.  Don’t forget to save some energy ready for night-time aurora borealis activity!

Walking and photography opportunities also abound.

Your tutor Karen Pearson

Not only will this be a personal visual diary full of wonderful memories, but it will also provide you with invaluable information towards main pieces of work.
