Sicilian Grand Tour (East)
8 days in Sicily
11 – 18 October 2015 full tour
With James Willis
Visit the beautiful Island of Sicily with artist tutor James Willis, paint a wonderful melting pot of Mediterranean architecture, from the Byzantine to the Baroque.
We start our Sicilian Grand Tour in the east of the Island in Taormina on the slopes of Mount Tauro. Described as a ‘patch of paradise’ by J.W.Goethe in his novel ‘Italian Journey’, Taormina retains much of its medieval character. Hugging a cliffside above the sparkling Ionian ‘Teatro Greco’ the ancient horseshoe-shaped Greek theatre enjoys stunning views of Mount Etna. Your sketchbooks will fill with buildings and landscapes as you immerse yourself in a week of art, architecture and archaeological sites.
With a colourful history of invasions and conquests, Greek, Arab, Roman and Norman influences can be discovered in the architecture and culture of this coveted Island. Mount Etna presides over this spectacular rugged Mediterranean landscape dotted with oranges and lemons. Cathedrals, churches and amphitheatres await our discovery in Taormina and in Syracuse the birth place of Archimedes.
After full days of painting these beautiful sites we choose lovely locations for our evenings, relaxing and enjoying wonderful Sicilian cuisine and perhaps a leisurely evening passeggiata.
