Alpine Butterflies & Bears
17 – 23 June 2017
with Mary-Anne Bartlett
Join us in Slovenia for pristine landscapes and fascinating wildlife, with many species of butterflies and the thrill and privilege of observing and sketching European Brown bears in their natural habitat.
The southern Alps present a pristine environment for plein-air painting: -pretty villages, high meadows full of flowers, forests and gentle mountains. You could come on this trip to breathe life into your watercolours, spending time on landscapes and flora, or you could work on the exciting wildlife opportunities.
Slovenia is just south of Austria and shares much of the same terrain, high-octane mountain culture as well as that wonderful mix of the Austro-Hungarian Baroque and practical timber alpine architecture. This is a geographical area that’s familiar to Mary-Anne, she spends happy times with families over the mountain in Austria.
Mary-Anne will take you to some stunning locations to sketch and paint this dramatic landscape, the brilliant blue River Socha tumbles over rocks and cascades through gorges, the colour of the water really is dazzling.
Meeting our guide in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana we set off to spend our first three nights near Bovec, surrounded by the high peaks of the Julian Alps.
The food in Slovenia is delicious with seasonal fresh produce, local cheeses, smoked hams, honey tasting of meadow flowers and smooth fruity ice-cream. With three wine growing regions and passionate producers there are some excellent wines awaiting discovery.
Further south, we find peaceful places with few visitors to set up our easels and sketchbooks. It’s very wild. It’s a tiny paradise.
In our Slovenian wildlife guides, we make sure we have the best opportunities to observe and sketch the European bear safely from hides nestling into the woodland. Mary-Anne will spend some time during the day preparing and planning for quietly sketching of these curious bears as they forage for their supper from the safety of the hides.
If you love bears but do not wish to sketch and paint them, this tour is still suitable for you. It’s also suitable for non-painters, walkers and photographers, please call us for more details.
We hope be able to drive very close to most of our painting sites. Underfoot the terrain will be uneven in places and the highest altitude we will reach on this tour is Mount Mangart at approximately 2300 meters.
We’ve worked it so that there’s only short journey times between our different spots so that you can have the best of every day painting.
