Art Safari creative adventures out of Africa to Spain
14 – 20 May 2017
with artist tutor Sian Dudley
Sian Dudley returns to Andalusia, a place she fell in love with leading an Art Safari there last year. Most well known as a flower painter, Sian was completely enchanted painting landscapes here, bringing in the flora into the foregrounds of larger compositions featuring buildings, valleys, terraces and oh so picturesque villages.
We are based in the small mountainside village of Mairena in the wild Alpujarra region, surrounded by the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains.
This is a place to breathe deep and feel reinvigorated, take some time to savour spectacular sunsets, with views reaching all the way to the distant Mediterranean coastline.
The structure of the landscape is astonishing, almond orchards are flanked by dry-stone walls, shy ibex graze and leap over precarious rocky outcrops and eagles patrol the skies above.
This is a peaceful haven for nature lovers with a rich diversity of wild plants, flowers, birds and butterflies. It’s now that the bee eaters return to the Alpujarra, weaving bright flashes of colour into the silver grey tones of rock and bark.
Mix rich earthy terracotta, emerald green leaves and sharp acidic lemons beneath piercing blue skies. In village gardens trees are heavily laden with bright succulent oranges, flowers spill out from pots on windowsills and long blue shadows play on white washed buildings.
This area of countryside has become familiar to many people through Chris Stewart’s ‘Driving over lemons’ and the writing of Gerald Brennan in his book ‘South from Granada’.
There will be optional walks available, your art kit will be transported for you.
Our en suite accommodation is traditional with blue painted shutters, white washed walls and crafted Spanish furniture. Our lovely hosts David and Emma are looking forward to having artists in residence again and will be on-hand with local knowledge and entertaining anecdotes about life in Mairena. Mairena is on a steep slope, so you’re mountaineering muscles will be in use every day.

This promises to be a fun and relaxing holiday, with plenty of artwork and time for exploration.
