Art Safari creative adventures to Spain

Spain title

Wild Rosemary & Oranges

29 May to 5 June 2018

with artist tutor Sian Dudley

Church near Las Chimeneas

This is a place to breathe deep and feel reinvigorated with your painting.  Paint in white villages with winding streets and donkeys, find a spot to sketch in olive groves and almond orchards.  Enjoy Andalusian food and hospitality.  Take time to savour spectacular sunsets, with views reaching all the way to the distant Mediterranean coastline.

For the first five days this peaceful Art Safari is based in the small mountainside village of Mairena in the wild Alpujarra region where you will be surrounded by the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains for this lovely plein air painting holiday.  As a special addition this year we spend our final days in the Moorish quarter of Albayzín in vibrant Granada so that you can paint the Alhambra and other areas of this elegant Andalusian city.

Well known as a flower painter, artist tutor Sian Dudley is completely enchanted with painting landscapes in the Alpujarra with Art Safari, bringing in the flora into the foregrounds of larger compositions featuring buildings, valleys, terraces and oh so picturesque villages.

The structure of the landscape is astonishing, almond orchards are flanked by dry-stone walls, shy ibex graze and leap over precarious rocky outcrops and eagles patrol the skies above.  A peaceful haven for nature lovers with a rich diversity of wild plants, flowers, birds and butterflies.  Bee eaters weave bright flashes of colour into the silver grey tones of rock and bark.

Las Chimeneas Terrasse2

Mix rich earthy terracotta, emerald green leaves and sharp acidic lemons beneath piercing blue skies.  In village gardens trees are heavily laden with bright succulent oranges, flowers spill out from pots on windowsills and long blue shadows play on white washed buildings.

This area of countryside has become familiar to many people through Chris Stewart’s ‘Driving over lemons’ and the writing of Gerald Brennan in his book ‘South from Granada’.

There will be optional walks available along marked trails, your art kit will be transported for you.

La chimeneasOur en suite accommodation is traditional with blue painted shutters, white washed walls and crafted Spanish furniture. Our lovely hosts David and Emma are looking forward to having artists in residence again and will be on-hand with local knowledge and entertaining anecdotes about life in Mairena.  Mairena is on a steep slope, so your muscles will be in use every day.

In Granada we will visit the Alhambra Palace, a dazzling place offering plenty to challenges us, with its elegant symmetry, geometrical patterns, columns, fountains, reflections and mosaics. The Generalife Palace gardens attached to the Alhambra, provided a private area of peace and tranquillity for the Granadan Muslim Kings.  The Moorish quarter is a maze of whitewashed houses, renaissance palaces and minarets. Narrow streets offer up many architectural treasures to sketch with Sian. We will be spoilt for choice!

The joining point for the group minibus transfer is Granada airport, (please liase withus for group flight times!).  We can arrange individual transfers from other airports (not included).

This promises to be a fun and relaxing holiday, with plenty of artwork and time for exploration.

Mairena is a mountain village with steep pathways, so a reasonable level of fitness is required!  Any non-painters will have wonderful mountains and villages to explore.
