Venice ‘the floating city’
Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world and reknowned for its wonderful art and architecture. It’s beautiful setting is unusual, sitting as it does on a lagoon situated on the Adriatic Sea and made up of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. In its entirety the city is listed as a World Heritage Site along with the Lagoon.
There are no cars and transport is by foot or vaporettos, the equivalent of buses in other cities, or many alternative small craft including the famous Gondolas for a gentle saunter along the canals. There are numerous attractions in Venice including St Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal, and the Piazza San Marco as the best known, although almost any of the waterways and walkways are crying out to painted, drawn or photographed.
Much of the city is bustling during the day time from early morning at the Rialto fish market to St Mark’s Square by the Basilica. A short boat ride away is the city of Murano famous for intricate glass work with attractions such as Bellini artworks, Churches of Byzantine influence and the Murano Glass Museum. Art Safari search out fascinating places for sketching the ornate churches or gentle backwaters of this magical city.
Venice is a two hour flight from London, and as a world tourist destination there are numerous places to stay to suit all budgets.
