20-17 October 2018

with Vicki Norman

In Fes, you’ll be walking through over a thousand years of Moroccan history with a sketchbook!

The city is situated in a narrow valley surrounded by olive tree lined hills and the mountain scenery of the Middle Atlas. It sits on the old crossroads of caravan routes linking ancient empires from the Sahara and the Mediterranean, trade between whom was the source of the city’s prosperity and growth as a centre of learning and spirituality. Around every corner there are architectural treasures – palaces, museums, mosques, courtyards and fountains whose construction and elaborate decoration bears tribute to Morocco’s incredibly skilled craftsmen. The meandering medina alleyways hum with activity and local life – donkeys carrying supplies, lively cafés, and colourful souks.

This week with Vicki will help you to expand your drawing and painting skills and deepen your understanding of the fertile relationship between them. Working primarily outside, using dynamic methods and techniques and exploring the role of drawing and painting on location, Vicki will inspire you to find individual approaches to the landscape. Simple structured exercises will give you the confidence to approach painting outdoors with a set of key principles to help you. Tuition will be comprised of talks, demonstrations, and plenty of practical time outside with one-to-one support. This course is ideal for painters working in oils or watercolours or drawing media. Vicki can offer advice on the transportation of oil paints and wet paintings – it really is quite straight forward when you know how!

Our base for this Art Safari is Riad Myra, located in the heart of the old city in a beautiful traditional Moroccan house with a courtyard with real wow factor and a roof top terrace with panoramic views of Fes. Breakfast is served in the tranquil courtyard before we head out to sketch and paint local life in the surrounding vibrant streets and alleyways.

On returning to our Raid in the evenings, you may choose to relax in the hotel’s hamam, before we explore the nearby restaurants for dinner and savour some wonderful Moroccan cuisine – couscous, tajine, pastilla, or maybe a bowl of harrira washed down with traditional mint tea and honey laden pastries for desert.

This holiday will involve quite a bit of walking as the medina has no access to cars and the area is hilly and the lanes laid with somewhat uneven cobblestones.

Fes is a short three hour flight from London Gatwick and temperatures in October will be a very comfortable 19 to 25° C with bright sunny days.
