Art Safari painting holidays and creative adventures in Malawi

Rift Valley Painter’s Adventure

04 – 16 September 2019

In this new Art Safari Malawi itinerary, Rift Valley Painter’s Adventure, we traverse the southern section of the Great Rift Valley that includes Lake Malawi, the southernmost of Africa’s Great Lakes, and its outlet the mighty Shire River. The views and countryside we paint on this trip are glorious – from the deep blue waters of the Lake which occupies the valley floor, to the purple hued rugged escarpments rising up to the central plateau, to the lush palm fringed Shire River flanked by grassy floodplains where game grazes contentedly.

Malawi is a small country packed with life and vitality. Its national parks and wilderness areas are unspoiled gems, teaming with wildlife for us to sketch. Thatched villages punctuate the hillsides and laughter is a constant companion. It’s impossible not to smile in Malawi; the Malawians make it a very happy place to be painting!

Highlights

  • Savour the serenity and simplicity of the Dzalanyama Forest Reserve; sketch the beautiful Brachystegia trees, rock pools, streams, and darting birds and butterflies.
  • Stay on the Robinson-Crusoe like Mumbo Island; snorkel and swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Malawi; and paint the spectacular sunsets from your hammock!
  • Discover elephant, buffalo, lion, and cheetah as well as more unusual species like the magnificent sable antelope on game drives in two of Malawi’s best wildlife areas: Liwonde National Park and Majete Game Reserve.
  • Float down the Shire River on a boat safari, painting hippos, crocodiles, and fish eagles…
  • Enjoy some first-class bird watching; we’ll keep our eyes open for the vivid green flashes of the Lilian’s Lovebirds, iridescent malachite kingfishers, and rarities like the Pel’s Fishing Owl.

Our 12-night itinerary will be spent in a mixture of friendly owner-run guest houses, simple cabins, and comfortable tented safari camps; all with private facilities, except at Dzalanyama where some rooms share a bathroom. A couple of lodges are off the grid and lighting is provided by wonderfully atmospheric paraffin and solar lamps.
