Leap like an impala!  Paint on Art Safari in Zambia with artist Shelly Perkins from 1-8 June 2019.  South Luangwa is one of Africa’s most impressive of National Parks, with incredible wildlife populations, continually enthralling sightings and some superb guiding!  The park is home to elephant, buffalo, hippo, zebra and giraffe, as well as lion, hyena and wild dog to name but a few of its residents.
It’s the time of year when the weather is cooler, the grasses are starting to dry and turn golden creating a beautiful backdrop for the wildlife, the skies are clear and blue, and predators are more active – making an encounter with the Luangwa’s famous leopards even more likely….

On this residential Art Safari, we spend time in the national park and work up sketches back at our safari lodge on the banks of the great Luangwa River. The combination of art and wildlife is unbelievably exciting.  Observational skills are on high alert and buzzing as you see each new animal and work out how to draw it.  It’s challenging and great fun; whatever your level of artistic skill.

Taking our sketchbooks, pencils and watercolours out on game drives, Shelly will coach and tutor you to help you learn about the shapes and colours of the animals and their habitat.  Shimmering rivers and oxbow lagoons, graceful antelope, mischievous baboons, sleeping lions, pods of hippos and flocks of water birds will fill the pages of our sketchbooks and will doubtless fuel months of artwork afterwards.

We stay at Thornicroft Lodge, which was built by Art Safari director Mary-Anne Bartlett and seven other Africa colleagues in 2008. This is a friendly, simple and comfortable lodge that is situated just outside South Luangwa National Park on the banks of the Luangwa River. The chalets have fabulous views over the river and there is always something happening at the water’s edge – whether it is hippos and crocodiles lazing around, or elephants coming to drink! Wildlife can also wander freely through the lodge at any time of day, so there is always some action to be sketched and drawn somewhere in camp…

Your tutor Shelly Perkins is a freelance wildlife artist whose passion for wildlife, travel and conservation drive the development of her work. She aims to emulate both the beauty and fragility of the natural world and present it an accessible way.

Shelly’s style is unique and unusual, combining traditional painting and drawing techniques with digital enhancement to create rich images of wildlife and landscapes. As well as showing her work in galleries Shelly has also undertaken commissions for The BBC Wildlife Magazine, The National Trust, The RSPB, and WWF, and was chosen as the Scott Polar research institute’s 2017 Antarctic Artist in Residence.
