This 10-night Art Safari starts in the wild north of Kruger National Park in the private Makuleke Concession, before following the path of Rudyard Kipling’s ‘great grey-green, greasy Limpopo’ inland to the Land of Giants in Botswana’s Northern Tuli Reserve.
We explore superb scenery; colossal baobabs and big skies, rocky outcrops, dramatic gorges, lush riverine forest, palm-fringed pans, and endless savanna plains.
The pages of our sketchbooks will be saturated with images of lime-green fever tree forests, quietly flowing rivers with lazy hippos, elephants and elephant shrews, richly marked nyala antelope, and with luck cheetah and lion!
The variation of landscape and habitat supports a myriad of birds; spot the ‘big six’ – Kori bustard, Pels fishing-owl, Saddle-billed stork, Martial eagle, Ground hornbills, and Lappetfaced vulture as well as a countless smaller, dazzling species – shrikes, rollers, kingfishers and bee-eaters.
The reserves we visit are also breeding areas for endangered species, such as eland, African wild dog, cheetah and black rhino.
We will stay in just two camps to minimise internal travel and spend as much time as we can painting.
Our lodges offer spectacular views and good old-fashioned African hospitality and comfort. In Kruger National Park our base will be Pafuri Camp in luxury safari tents each with a private verandah overlooking the Luvuvhu River. In Botswana we stay at Tuli Safari Lodge – a gorgeous little retreat in a ruggedly beautiful wilderness.
For the most part we will explore the wildlife areas by vehicle, but we will also have the opportunity do to walking safaris. In addition, at Tuli Safari Lodge there are several hides where we can sit and quietly observe and paint animals as they come to us.
We will be travelling towards the end of the summer rains, when temperatures are comfortably warm and there is the possibility of the odd thunderstorm. It’s a particularly lovely time of year for landscapes as the seasonal rains transform the normally dry and dusty bush into a floral wonderland!
