Tour contentPainting the wildlife of Zambia - virtual holiday
No need to pack! On this virtual safari we imagine ourselves in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. We meet many of the animals which populate this amazing wildlife area and spend time observing them. Learning each animal thoroughly we draw and paint and sketch.
Spend four days sketching wildlife and landscape with Mary-Anne Bartlett, who has been leading Art Safari tours to Zambia every year since 2003. We hope to link up with Thornicroft Lodge while we’re live so you can feel the true heat of this time of year.
Mary-Anne leads you via Zoom to the great dry twisting Luangwa River. At this time of year the wildlife comes to the river bed – we will have the chance to draw from stills and video footage and learn the techniques of a wildlife artist. With art demonstrations, interaction and tales from the bush Mary-Anne will show you how she tackles various species – including elephant, lion and carmine bee-eaters. Even using photos she will show you how to make your sketches lively and loose.
In between your painting sessions Mary-Anne will give you exercises and homework to help your technique for drawing moving animals. She will also focus on the river and the life along its banks.
We will give you some recipes from our lodge to try out between your painting sessions.
Learning via Zoom is highly concentrated and productive. It allows you to delve into technique and imagination.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
All sessions start at 2pm BST
Day 1: Meet Mary-Anne and the Art Safari team on Zoom for three hours of art demonstration and tuition time, which includes advice on sketching elephants and carmines as well as touching on other species.
Mary-Anne shows examples of her own sketches from South Luangwa.
You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste from a library of photos you will receive as part of the course package.
Mary-Anne includes a slide talk on South Luangwa and about some of the artists who have painted there.
You have time in between session to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group or by email.
Day 2: We meet again the following afternoon to tackle a second painting through the same process. Tuition will include colour mapping and focussing on lions.
Day 3: The third day is free for you to paint all day.
Day 4: We hold a final short meeting (around an hour) to review and share your work and insights from the course.
The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.
It’s going to be a fun and highly informative safari!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Mary-Anne will work in watercolour but you may use any medium – she often works with a simple, ‘double primary’ palette comprised of Cadmium Lemon yellow, Cadmium Yellow Golden, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt and Cerulean Blue.
