Kenya offers a magical mix of colour and diversity of landscape and wildlife.  On this luxury, fly-in Art Safari we explore the jewel-like lakes of The Great Rift Valley and the immense savanna plains of the Masai Mara to make the most of the splendid scenery and abundant big game.

We ease into our safari with a visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi to learn about rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned young elephants.  This is a great opportunity to start learning from Mary-Anne the fast techniques needed for sketching moving animals.  We will also spend some painting time at the Giraffe Centre to challenge ourselves to capture the proportions and patterns of these elegant giants!

Lake Naivasha is our next stop and one of the prettiest areas in Kenya.  The lake is like a vast, sunlit sea and is surrounded by yellow fever trees with the dark outlines of Mount Longonot on the skyline.  Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala stroll along the shores and the waters are a sanctuary for many wonderful birds as well as impressive numbers of hippo.

A major feature of the Rift Valley Lakes are the famed flocks of flamingos that gather here to breed and feed.  Watching millions of flamingos shimmering in pinks, whites and oranges over the shallow blue lakes is truly spectacular!  On a fabulous day trip, we will also visit Lake Nakuru where endangered black and white rhino live alongside the colourful, active flamingos.

We continue on to the glory of the Masai Mara for the full excitement and natural drama of the one of the largest open wildlife areas in Africa.  The Mara is top of many safari wish lists for good reason – big cats are abundant, cheetah sightings are almost guaranteed, tens of thousands of antelope and hundreds of thousands of zebra and wildebeest roam the savannah grasslands.   This is magnificent Africa at its best!

Our sketchbook pages will fill with sleeping lions, journeys of giraffes travelling majestically across the landscape, slowly grazing herds of zebra and wildebeest, fabulous sunsets with acacia silhouetted on the horizon… and so much more!

We have some lovely accommodation lined up for you too. In Nairobi we stay at the Ole Sereni Hotel overlooking the National Park, before flying on to Lolida House an old Kenyan farmstead in an idyllic setting on Lake Naivasha, and lastly Little Governor’s Camp – a luxurious tented camp on the banks of the Mara River and the location for much of ‘Big Cat Diary’!

March is a great time to visit.  The weather is mild with warm days and cool evenings, and it is mostly dry.  It’s typically a quieter month for the Mara, so with fewer people around we will have more wilderness to ourselves!  With the rains on their way at the end of the month, a mini migration of zebra and wildebeest (about 300,000) cover the plains around the Masai Mara, and there’s a plethora of baby animals from warthogs, giraffes and elephants to hyenas, zebras and eland.
