Tour contentWatercolour; snowy mountains, fjords and northern lights
Karen Pearson leads this exciting icy Art Safari via Zoom to take you into the high latitudes during the dark months of winter, when the northern lights are at their most active and most exciting. In the gloaming of the daylight the fjords and mountains are a joy to paint and sketch. The Sami cultural influence is still here and the Nordic way of life in the winter can teach us so much about how to enjoy our own outdoor time.
Spend happy days sketching and painting the landscapes, animals, trees, fjords and skies of this extraordinary part of the world with Karen Pearson who has led many of Art Safari’s tours to Norway over the last few years.
Join Karen Pearson for fun and informative artists demos to learn how to paint the northern lights and wintry snow scenes. You will be warm, but you’ll feel you’ve been there.
In between your painting sessions Karen will give you exercises and homework to help your technique for drawing in challenging environments, but also how to deal with the light, shadows and reflections of snow. Painting the northern lights can help you with any sky, as you learn how to create contrast and exciting wet-in-wet with different media.
We will give you some recipes from the farmstead and restaurants we love up there to try out between your painting sessions.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
All sessions start at 2pm GMT
Day 1: Meet Karen and the Art Safari team on Zoom for three hours of art demonstration and tuition time, which includes advice on painting outdoors in the winter as well as concentrating on Norwegian subjects, scenes and themes.
Karen shows examples of her own sketches from Norway.
You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste from a library of photos you will receive as part of the course package.
Karen includes a slide talk on northern Norway and about some of the artists who have painted there.
You have time in between session to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group or by email.
Day 2: The second day is free for you to paint all day.
Day 3: We meet again the following afternoon to tackle a second painting through the same process.
Day 4: The fourth day is free for you to paint all day.
Day 5: We hold a final shorter meeting to review and share your work and insights from the course.
The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.
It’s going to be a fun and highly informative safari!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Karen will work in watercolour but you may use any medium – she often works with a simple, ‘double primary’ palette comprised of Cadmium Lemon yellow, Cadmium Yellow Golden, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt and Cerulean Blue.
