Join experienced artist and guide Karen Pearson on a late winter art expedition with bright snowy landscapes and pink skies…
Our base for this Art Safari is the beautiful Kvaløya Island (Whale Island), about an hour’s drive from Tromso, where we are surrounded by Norwegian wilderness and superb views of mountains and the sea.
Dress warmly for sketching walks as we explore the arctic landscape here with its dramatically rocky coastline scattered with quaint wooden fishing huts and secluded villages, panoramic views of the icy ocean and towering snowy fjords. Late winter is a wonderful time of year in this part of Norway, the landscape is still covered in a crisp blanket of snow, there is plenty of daylight and sunlight (!) and the soft hues of pinks, oranges and purples at sunrise and sunset are magical. We will paint outside and in the warmth of our spacious studio with wraparound views…
If the skies are clear we have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights when darkness falls (approx 5pm). Gazing upon luminous green bands of light as they flicker, dance and roll across the sky is a phenomenal experience. Sometimes the lights can be seen several times during an evening. It is quite simply breath-taking.
Karen will lead a trip into Tromso, once the starting point of many arctic expeditions, to show you the museums and art galleries.
You might also like to join a reindeer sledding excursion with Sami reindeer herdsmen for a day. This is a chance to ask questions about the Sami culture and share a hot meal with your Sami hosts. Or you can opt to stay at the Farmstead and work on your Norwegian sketchbook.
Our friendly Norwegian hosts are looking forward to welcoming Art Safari again to their peaceful waterfront farmstead. We sleep in cosy timber cabins with underfloor heating and tuck into tasty homemade food – fresh cakes, waffles, and hearty traditional stews, all featuring fresh local ingredients from wild berries and brown cheese, to Altantic ‘skrei’ cod and reindeer.
The farmstead also has a rooftop Jacuzzi and sauna overlooking the sea, available for guests to rent. It’s a splendid way to view the Northern Lights!
