Capture the colours of Cornwall's breath taking coastal scenery and its maritime history with artist Vicki Norman

Join artist Vicki Norman for a springtime sketching break with stunning views in St Ives, Cornwall.

Famous for its dramatic coastline of rugged cliffs, sweeping white shell beaches, pebbled coves and turquoise waters – Cornwall is one of Vicki’s favourite painting destinations for its wonderful, moody light and contrasting colours.

This sketching break is all about improving our observational skills, and Vicki will be on hand to help you capture the light, colour and movement in our Cornish surroundings.  She will work in pencil and watercolour, as well as charcoal and pastels.  The emphasis will be on filling our sketchbooks with lots of different material to keep us inspired and happy painting for months to come…

This new Art Safari is based in the seaside town of St Ives, once a tiny fishing village and now a vibrant town full of historic charm, art galleries and buzzing restaurants.  There is something to sketch here around every corner – from harbour views, boats, fishermen’s cottages in narrow cobbled streets, and seabirds…  What’s more, just a five-minute walk from St Ives harbour, Porthmeor Beach offers us the perfect spot to watch the tides roll in and out, while we study the colours of the sea and sky.

With bucket loads of inspiration, it’s no surprise that Cornwall has attracted some of the UK’s most well-known painters.  We’ll take our sketchbooks to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, as well as Penlee House Gallery in Penzance, home to a great many paintings by members of the Newlyn School, and draw inspiration from classic painters and contemporary artists alike.

There will be opportunities for short sketching walks along the wild cliff tops around Godrevy to capture the glorious far-reaching views out to sea or perhaps Godrevy’s Lighthouse, which stands tall marking the Stones, a hazardous reef off St Ives.  We will also visit the iconic St Michael’s Mount and the world-famous Eden Project, a visionary conservation idea where plants from all climate zones of the world thrive in temperature controlled biodomes. It’ll be a treat to sketch such a unique variety of plants.

We will be visiting in April, when the weather is warming up and getting drier, so we hope to have some lovely, bright painting days… But of course, this is England, and we specialise in unpredictable weather, so although Vicki be sketching outdoors as much as possible, there will be indoor options on every day.

Our base for this Art Safari is the very comfortable St Ives Harbour Hotel and Spa, just a few steps away from the fabulous Porthminster Beach and a ten minute walk to St Ives Harbour.  All breakfasts are included and dinners too – we will make reservations at restaurants in St Ives that we hope will showcase the fabulous local seafood and foodie hotspots!
