There is inspiration every few paces in Italy! Paint gorgeous coastal towns, the troglodyte city of Matera, and fairy tale like trulli in rolling countryside with artist tutor Vicki Norman.

Immerse yourself in the colours, art, architecture, and food of southern Italy on this twelve-night Art Safari journey from the Amalfi to the Adriatic Coast.

After arriving in Naples, we spend the first five nights of our holiday on the breathtakingly beautiful Amalfi Coast where steep, craggy cliffs plunge into a sparkling Mediterranean, and pastel-coloured villages spill down mountain sides that are terraced with fragrant lemon groves.  We will be based in the relaxed seaside town of Minori from where we will explore some of Amalfi’s well-known locations including Ravello and Positano, as well as lesser-known towns and villages that pepper the unique landscape of this rugged peninsular.

Moving inland, we travel to the ancient city of Matera, perched high on a rocky outcrop.  Over the next four nights we explore this magical UNESCO world heritage site , which is famous for its complex of honeycomb like cave dwellings and rock churches, carved into the calcarenite rock of the Gravina Gorge.  You may recognise parts of this beautiful city from high-speed chase in the latest James Bond film No Time to Die!

The last location on this wonderful journey is a three night stay in the rolling hills of the Puglian countryside surrounded by olive groves, drystone walls, vineyards and orchards.  This is the land of Trulli, traditional stone huts with conical ‘beehive’ roofs.  Constructed as field shelters, stores and dwellings, the Trulli lend a fairy-tale quality to our surroundings. Life slows down a notch in this agricultural region.  The locals rise early, disappear for long siestas and dine late in the evening.  Vespas rattle and cough through narrow streets, women congregate to chat and groups of men with weather-beaten faces gather in piazzas to play cards in the late afternoon sun.

We will also spend a day in the nearby historic Adriatic seaport of Monopoli, painting the ultramarine Gozzi, traditional fishing boats that bob up and down in waters of the old port.

The pages of our sketchbooks will be full of spectacular vistas, charming fishing villages, elegant architecture – churches, caves, bridges, piazzas… and romantic countryside scenes.

You will sketch on the move as you explore and find places en-route to settle into longer painting sessions.  As well as group tuition Vicki will offer one-to-one tutorials.  She will help you select a scene and make a good composition from the fabulous views around you, teach you how to capture beautiful colour harmonies in your paintings, and give advice and tips on tackling buildings, water and reflections…and much more!

Italy’s southern region also has some amazing culinary delights to savour, and what could be better at the end of a blissful day’s painting!  Amalfi’s cuisine is full of fresh flavours, tomatoes, lemons and the sea on your plate.  Puglia is a region of farmers and home to some of Italy’s most famous pasta dishes and speciality breads…

In between our painting stops, there is time to wander the stone streets and market places of the historic towns, stopping at the little boutiques to admire the highly skilled local handicrafts – exquisite ceramics, chic linens, unusual jewellery and handmade paper…  perhaps with a side order of gelato!
