Challenge your colour-mixing skills with a landscape of greens - rain forests, verdant volcanic slopes, mangroves, coffee plantations, not to mention iridescent hummingbirds and brilliantly coloured frogs...

Pack watercolour pans in vibrant colours – azure, sap green, winsor green, viridian, lemon yellow and cadmium yellow for colourful Costa Rica, with its unique spirit and uplifting Latin rhythms.  Artist tutor and wildlife guide Darrren Rees is very happy to be leading his second Art Safari to this small country with a big heart!

Wildlife is central to this itinerary, with an incredible range of sensitive eco-systems supporting a wide variety of species – dazzling hummingbirds, beautiful butterflies, tiny poison dart frogs, acrobatic howler monkeys and some rarities like the extraordinary laid-back sloth.

Our 14-night journey from coast to coast starts in bustling San Jose with visits to the gold and jade museums whose dazzling array of ancient artefacts offer a sense of place and history. Then we travel by road to Tortuguero National Park on the Northern Caribbean coast.  This area is vital for the conservation of Green Sea Turtles, Leatherback and Hawksbill turtles which nest on the beaches here from July to October.

With our sketchbooks on our laps we drift along freshwater canals and lagoons that criss-cross the wetlands, making field-sketches of spectacled caiman, river turtles, parrots, herons and kingfishers.

In the foliage we look for sloth, jungle branches dip and swish with acrobatic troops of foraging Howler Monkeys, Spider Monkeys and Capuchin Monkeys, in the canopy exotic bird calls add to the Jurassic atmosphere.

Our next stop is Arenal Volcano National Park where we hope for clear skies to paint the perfect cone of Arenal Volcano, take sketching walks along nature trails, and painting excursions to waterfalls.  There’s also a chance to relax in the volcanic hot-springs.

Then we head for the Central Pacific coast to sketch on palm fringed beaches where the jungle tumbles down to meet the sand, and take boat trips into the mangrove forests of Manuel Antonio National Park.  Rare squirrel monkeys are a big attraction here, and dolphins and migrating whales are sometimes seen offshore.

We end our Costa Rica Art Safari at a coffee plantation high up in Naranjo Central Valley with stunning views; at night the valley floor twinkles below with the lights of distant San Jose.  Here we explore the Chayote Cloud Forest Reserve, home to over 150 bird species including the resplendent quetzal, toucans and tanagers, and of course sample some delicious coffee!

Darren will encourage you to hone your observational skills, to capture birds and animals in fast lines and colour washes, to compose longer studies, and sweeping landscapes.  Our local Costa Rican guide will work with Darren to give us the best possible wildlife painting opportunities, explaining the biodiversity of locations we visit.
