The Kingdom of Wonder awaits us on this Art Safari full of beauty and mystery...

Imagine sketching lost-in-the-jungle temples and sparkling silver pagodas; navigating the last city of the Khmer empire by tuk tuk; and gliding along waterways watching the light play on water, small fishing boats phut by and observing life on the water’s edge in Cambodia’s floating villages.

On our 17-night journey, we travel from architectural wonders of Angkor Wat to laid back Battambang, and onwards to the bustling capital city of Phnom Penh with its wide boulevards and old colonial buildings, and finally to the sleepy coastal town Kep.  Along the way, we will pass through landscapes full of painting inspiration – emerald green paddies, swathes of dense jungle, pepper plantations and turquoise seas, and we delve into Cambodia’s rich culture and history, meeting up with local artists, dancers and acrobats…

The pages of our sketchbooks will fill with overgrown ruins of great civilizations entwined with the roots of massive strangler fig trees, details of elaborate carvings, the agile figures of traditional apsara dancers, flowing robes of Buddhist monks, vibrant market scenes and village life.

Our hosts treat us to some splendid hotels set in tropical gardens and serve up some delicious local cuisine.  Typical Cambodian dishes to look out for include the delicious fish amok (curried fish steamed in a banana leaf), samlor karkoo (soup made with vegetables and green fruit – usually jackfruit, banana and papaya) and in the Kep and Kampot regions, crab served with pepper sauce is widely available. From Cambodia’s days as a French Indochina colony, there’s a national love of coffee, baguettes and pastries!

Painting Highlights

  • Spend 5 days painting the incredible and vast Angkor Wat complex, Cambodia’s ancient temple city and one of the wonders of the oriental world.
  • Discover life on the river or simply enjoy a spot of bird watching as we cruise Tonle Sap Lake and float down the waterways on a wooden boat from Siem Reap to Battambang.
  • Watch energetic and talented young artists perform at art and dance schools in Battambang and Phnom Penh.
  • Learn about the fascinating process of silk production and the art of silk weaving – some of the finest in the world.
  • Soak up the local vibe with a tuk tuk tour, stopping at artisans homes and workshops to discover how they make Khmer noodes, rice paper, prahoc (fish paste) and other Cambodian treats.
  • Trundle through beautiful rural landscapes on the unique Bamboo Train and sketch traditional Khmer villages, fruits orchards and rice fields.
  • Visit the Silver Pagoda and Royal Palace in Phnom Phen, both of which are highly decorative and lend themselves to great flourishes of the paintbrush!
  • Catch a glimpse of the rare “Irrawaddy Dolphins” as we take a boat trip on the Mekong River.
  • Spend a tranquil couple of days surrounded by unspoiled white sand beaches and coconut trees in Kep.
