Julia Cassels

Join artist tutor Julia Cassels in the South of France, painting in the beautiful light of Provence...

Spend four days with artist Julia Cassels on Zoom as we follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh, sketching the café culture and the wild landscapes of The Camargue.

On this virtual painting holiday, we will visit the city of Arles on the banks of the Rhône, with its vast Roman Amphitheatre, buzzing cafes, and wonderful markets with stalls bowing under the weight of huge cheeses, charcuterie and locally grown produce….

The dramatic limestone Alpilles Mountains and the magical lagoons of the Camargue delta will form our background as we paint its surprising wildlife from galloping white horses to beautiful pink flamingos.

We are looking forward to welcoming you there!

Julia will introduce you to other artists who have painted in this area as well as showing her own sketches from the region painting on location.  Taking you through art demonstrations you will have the chance to learn from Julia’s lovely loose watercolour technique and ask plenty of questions.

Working from stills we will learn how to make fast sketches of people and landscapes that capture a sense of place.

In between your painting sessions Julia will give you exercises and tasks to help your technique.

All sessions start at 2pm BST

Day 1: Meet Julia and the Art Safari team on Zoom for three hours of art demonstration and tuition time.

Julia will include a slide talk about some of the people who have painted in the region and show you examples of her own sketches from The Camargue.

You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste from a library of photos you will receive as part of the course package.

You have time in between sessions to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group or by email.

Day 2: We meet again the following afternoon to tackle a second painting through the same process.

Day 3: The third day is free for you to paint all day.

Day 4: We hold a slightly shorter final meeting (around 2hrs) to review and share your work and insights from the course.

The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.
