Join Claudia for days filled with creativity and inspiration as we sketch and explore the rugged Cornish peninsula...

Feel the sand between your toes on our first virtual Art Safari to Cornwall where wild cliffs, peaceful coves and busy fishing harbours have been an inspiration to artists throughout the centuries.

Claudia is passionate about using sketchbooks to grow ideas and improve our observation skills so the emphasis on this virtual tour will be on filling a sketchbook with enough material to keep you inspired for months to come.

The Cornish landscape is full of contrast. We’ll examine colours and techniques for painting the distant horizons and dramatic cliffs between Cape Cornwall and Porthcurno, an area that Claudia knows well and has sketched over many years of walking the coast path. As well as wide open spaces, this landscape also has hidden lanes full of wild flowers, dragonflies and butterflies.

We’ll also spend a day in St Ives. This popular fishing harbour and seaside town has something to sketch around every corner and it’s no surprise that it has attracted some of the UK’s most well known painters.  We’ll take our sketchbooks to Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth museum, and look at the paintings of artists like Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis to see how much we can learn from their unique approach to a subject.

Cornwall is also home to the world famous Eden Project, a visionary conservation project where plants from all climate zones of the world thrive in temperature controlled biodomes.  It’s a treat to sketch such a unique variety of plants.

Claudia works mainly in pencil, pens, watercolours and various coloured pencils, but you are welcome to use whatever media you feel comfortable with.

All sessions start at 2pm BST

Day 1:  Introduction to Cornwall and a virtual tour showing the huge variety of subjects it offers the artist.  During the three hour session Claudia will show examples of her own sketches and work by other artists who have been inspired by these islands. There will be detailed watercolour and drawing demonstrations, and the chance for you to try out some of the techniques shown using the reference material provided.

Day 2:  Another afternoon session with detailed painting and drawing demonstrations. There will be plenty of time for questions on materials and techniques and advice on how to approach your own paintings.

Day 3:  Final session to review your work, answer questions and share our experiences.

The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.

  • A laptop, Macbook, PC, Ipad or tablet

Claudia works in watercolour but you are welcome to use whatever medium you feel comfortable with.  You will need plenty of cheap cartridge paper or sketch books, pencils and sketching pens, a small drawing board or firm backed watercolour pad. You may well want to produce more finished paintings away from the computer screen, but it will be useful to have a way of drawing and sketching, or at least making notes whilst being able to see your computer screen! Plus the usual water jars, kitchen towel, palettes, your usual art materials.

If you work in watercolours, these are the materials Claudia uses:

Windsor and Newton artists’ watercolours:

  • Blues: cobalt, ultramarine, cerulean, indigo, winsor blue
  • Reds: alizarin, cadmium red, burnt sienna
  • Yellows: raw sienna, aureolin, cadmium yellow, naples yellow

Cartridge paper sketchbooks and Saunders Waterford watercolour paper

Rowney Aquafine watercolour brushes – selection of sizes

Waterproof sketching pens and a selection of pencils, crayons, erasers

If you have any questions about materials, do get in touch.
