We take artistic inspiration from some beautiful areas of Japan during the ‘autumn-leaves-viewing’ months.
Everywhere you look in Japan there is superb design, thoughtful juxtaposition of objects and colour. This country has many lessons to teach us in the visual arts, but also in consideration for space, contrast and positioning.
Spend four days sketching the floating landscapes of Mount Fuji, Kyoto’s temples and graceful gardens. Colours range from brilliant yellow, to lime greens, to reds, oranges, pinks and magentas.
With art demonstrations, interaction and tales from Japan, Mary-Anne will show you how she uses Chinese brushes to help her with wet in wet techniques that help the sense of floating landscapes. She will give talks about artists and their artwork that can influence your own approach, including Hokusai and Kibota, as well as a talk on animals in Japanese art and design.
In between your painting sessions Mary-Anne will give you exercises and homework to help your technique develop further.
We will also give you some tasty local recipes to experiment with between your painting sessions, for those who’d like to immerse themselves in the culture as well as the art.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
All sessions start at 2pm GMT
Day 1: Meet Mary-Anne and the Art Safari team on Zoom for three hours of art demonstration and tuition time, which includes perspective, tonal variation and wet in wet techniques in water colour and in ink as she paints a demonstration painting of Mount Fuji. Mary-Anne will give a slide talk on Japan artists including Hokusai. She will also talk about Japanese landscape painting and how its perspective influences us, and touching on garden design.
Mary-Anne will also show examples of her own sketches from Japan.
You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste from a library of photos you will receive as part of the course package.
You have time in between session to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group or by email.
Day 2: We meet again the following afternoon to tackle a second painting through the same process. Tuition will comprise of a second talk, bringing in the design and craft element that surrounds you everywhere you go in Japan, from gardens to pattern, from food presentation to kimonos. She will focus on the work of Itchiku Kibota and his mesmerizing kimonos.
Day 3: The third day is free for you to paint all day. During this time you are welcome to be in touch for extra guidance.
Day 4: We hold a final shorter meeting (around two hours) to review and share your work and insights from the course.
The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.
