Join artist Mary-Anne Bartlett on a virtual journey to paint some of Africa's best wildlife in wonderful and dramatic landscapes...

Spend four days sketching wildlife and landscape with Mary-Anne Bartlett, who has been leading Art Safari tours to Namibia nearly every year since 2006.

On this virtual safari in Namibia, one of the world’s great desert countries, we will be able to find the highest cheetah population in the world.  Add in desert adapted elephants, banded mongoose, meerkats, Cape fur seals and dolphins and there’s a wide variety of wildlife to paint.

We will focus on how Namibia has an impact on freeing the artist into a unique way of seeing.  Mary-Anne will give talks on the landscapes, wildlife, habitats and culture that has inspired other artists to create amazing paintings, sculpture and drawings.  The geology of Namibia is what makes the landscapes so dramatic (from canyons to enormous sand dunes, from mountains with rock paintings and engravings to ancient floodplains with dinosaur footprints, from coastal deserts to shimmering salt pans), so we will also touch on this too.

We’ll meet three times for demos on painting desert landscapes and wildlife, as well exercises to stretch your ways of seeing.

We hope to link up with our colleagues in Namibia while we’re live so you can feel the heat of this time of year.

We will have the chance to draw from stills and video footage and learn the techniques of a wildlife artist. With art demonstrations, interaction and tales from the bush Mary-Anne will show you how she tackles various species – including cheetah, rhino and ostrich.  Even using photos she will show you how to make your sketches lively and loose.

In between your painting sessions Mary-Anne will give you exercises and homework to help your technique for drawing moving animals.  She will also focus on life in the sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

We will give you some Namibian recipes to try out between your painting sessions (not just meat!).

Learning via Zoom is highly concentrated and productive.  It allows you to delve into technique and imagination.

All sessions start at 2pm GMT

Day 1: Meet Mary-Anne and the Art Safari team on Zoom for three hours of art demonstration and tuition time, which includes advice on sketching elephants and carmines as well as touching on other species.

Mary-Anne shows examples of her own sketches from Namibia.

You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste from a library of photos you will receive as part of the course package.

Mary-Anne includes a slide talk on Namibia and about some of the artists who have painted there.

You have time in between session to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group or by email.

Day 2: We meet again the following afternoon to tackle a second painting through the same process.

Day 3: The third day is free for you to paint all day.

Day 4: We hold a final short meeting (around an hour) to review and share your work and insights from the course.

The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.

It’s going to be a fun and highly informative safari!
