With dramatic cliffs and coves, hidden harbours, abundant wildlife and wildflowers, ruined castles and wooded creeks, Pembrokeshire has plenty to inspire…
Artist tutor Claudia Myatt knows this beautiful part of Wales very well and looks forward to sharing some of her favourite places with you. She will encourage you to fill your sketchbook pages in your own way and style as well as trying some new ideas; there will also be plenty of practical help and demonstrations on some of these tricky subjects:
Claudia works in watercolour, mainly using line and wash techniques. She loves drawing and painting on location, using hardbacked sketchbooks as a colourful travel diary and a place to grow ideas and inspiration. For this virtual holiday we will provide a file of reference photos for you to use with your course material and working sketches so that you can keep the creativity going once the course is over.
Note: you are welcome to bring whatever sketching and painting materials you like to use, but Claudia’s tuition will focus on line and tone drawing (pencils and sketching pens), watercolours, watercolour pencils.
How does it work?
All sessions start at 2pm GMT
Day 1: New sketchbooks and wide horizons
Introduction to the landscape and coastline of Pembrokeshire and some of the artists who have lived and worked there.
When you walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, that wide blue horizon will feature in almost every sketch – but how do you select what to draw and how to fit it onto a small page? We’ll look at how to select a scene, the problems of drawing distance, and the colours of sea, sky and rock.
We’ll also look at materials and colour choices for drawing and painting on location. A change of art material can sometimes refresh your approach and help you to find your style, or you may prefer to improve your confidence and skill with the equipment you already use.
Day 2: Castles and Creeks
We’ll visit Carew Castle virtually and look at how to draw and paint the colours and textures of old stone, as well as the variety of compositions you can find within the dramatic shapes of this impressive castle.
In the tidal creeks and upper reaches of the beautiful Cleddau river, woodlands and sky are reflected in the water. This kind of landscape gives us the opportunity to mix dappled greens and focus on light, shadow and reflections.
Day 3: Free time for your own paintings.
Day 4: Colourful harbours and clouds of puffins!
Today we zoom over to Tenby. This colourful harbour town is very popular with artists because there is so much to paint here. We’ll explore the challenges of sketching beaches and boats, town houses and people.
A virtual boat trip to the island of Skomer gives us the chance to practice drawing on the move! The island is famous for its seabirds and is surrounded by a swirl of guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, fulmars, gannets and puffins. Using video and stills, we’ll look at how to do the impossible and sketch these fast-moving birds in a few lines and brushstrokes.
Final round up, feedback and questions, and a look at how to progress your sketchbook ideas, keep the inspiration going, and create more finished paintings.
