Mary-Anne first painted in Malawi in 1991 as expedition artist to ‘In Livingstone’s Footsteps’, also following the footsteps of her own great great grandfather. On this 4-day virtual painting holiday she will introduce you to wonderful people and places, and show you the best of Malawi’s wildlife.
Malawi is a small country; it is dramatic, serene, beautiful and full of life. The views we paint on this virtual tour are glorious – from the deep blue waters of the Lake which occupies the valley floor, to the purple-hued rugged escarpment rising up to the central plateau, and sweeping down again to the magnificent Shire River flanked by lush green palms and grassy floodplains where game grazes contentedly.
Malawi’s national parks and wilderness areas are gems, teaming with wildlife for us to sketch, including some more unusual species like the impressive sable antelope. In the south of the country the Shire River offers some of the best river-based elephant, crocodile, hippo viewing in Africa. Birdlife is fabulous too and colourful – expect to encounter iridescent kingfishers, vivid green Bohm’s bee-eaters and glossy starlings…
With art demonstrations, interaction and tales from the bush Mary-Anne will show you how she tackles Malawi’s wildlife and landscapes. Even using photos she will show you how to make your sketches lively and loose.
Learning via Zoom is highly concentrated and productive. It allows you to delve into technique and imagination.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
All sessions start at 2pm GMT
Day 1: Meet Mary-Anne and the Art Safari team on Zoom for three hours of art demonstration and tuition time.
Mary-Anne includes a slide talk on Malawi and about some of the artists who have painted there. She will also show examples of her own sketches from Malawi.
In her demonstrations Mary-Anne will pick a subject to develop on camera while she talks you through her process.
You will have the option to paint from a variety of images to suit your taste from a library of photos you will receive as part of the course package.
You have time in between session to complete your work and submit images of your paintings for feedback on our private Facebook group or by email.
Day 2: We meet again the following afternoon to tackle a second painting through the same process.
Day 3: The third day is free for you to paint all day.
Day 4: We hold a final shorter meeting to review and share your work and insights from the course.
The workshop will be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.
It’s going to be a fun and highly informative safari!
