Sketching African wildlife from life

This is a wonderful opportunity to study and paint Zambia's spectacular wildlife at a cooler time of year.

Shelly is super excited to be returning to the incredible South Luangwa National Park to lead this amazing wildlife packed Art Safari.

On this special trip, we will enjoy some longer days in the park, exploring the more remote and untapped regions where we will be fully immersed into the daily life of this beautiful river valley.  This is the cool, dry season and on our game drives we join the wildlife from dawn to dusk, following the animals progress as they wake, eat, drink, and interact.

At this time of year, the bush is filled with young life, and greenery, the dry grassland now refreshed by the recent rains.  The light is long and languid, the golden hours extended to maximise the potential for fantastic photography and sketching opportunities, or just the chance to experience the pure joy of dawn sunlight filtering through a leopard’s whiskers!  Predators are energised by the cooler conditions, hunting later into the day.  This is also one of the best times for the parks outstanding birdlife; we will be wowed by water birds, in raptures over raptors and ooooing over owls (sorry!).  Anyone not already in love with wild birds will no doubt be a convert by the end of this trip.

Our base for this residential Art Safari is the friendly Thornicroft Lodge, which was built by Art Safari director Mary-Anne Bartlett and other Africa colleagues in 2008.  The lodge is simple but comfortable and situated just outside South Luangwa National Park on the banks of the Luangwa River.  The chalets have fabulous views over the river and there is always something happening at the water’s edge – whether it is hippos and crocodiles lazing around, or elephants coming to drink!  Wildlife can also wander freely through the lodge at any time of day, so there is always some action to be sketched and drawn somewhere in camp…

We focus on wildlife sketching from open vehicles and Shelly will tutor with demonstrations and some one-to-one tuition time.  She will help you to develop your way of working, and observational techniques for drawing moving animals from life.
