Northern Lights

January 2015

12 – 17 January 2015 with Mary-Anne Bartlett

A wintry short art break to start 2015.  Visit Norway with Karen and/or Mary-Anne in search of the spectacle of the Northern Lights.

Our homely base for this Art Safari is in a wonderfully peaceful waterfront cottage, in the tiny fishing village of Oldervik, approximately 1 hour from Tromso.

After dark we watch out for the glimmerings of these wonderful spirit lights, and when a full display happens we scramble for clothing and gaze at their antics for hours. What is so surprising about this tour is how much time you spend so comfortably outdoors, walking, sketching and watching the Northern Lights.  Somehow it’s just icy exciting, not cold.

January is a really super time to see the Northern Lights.

Aurora sightings depend on having a cloud-free sky and January often has very stable, cold and clear weather.  Around the 10th January the sun appears on the tops of the mountains around Oldervik at midday.  There are about 5 & 1/2 hours of twilight from around 9am until about 2.30pm, with varying shades of beautiful blues, purples, greens and golds in the sky when the weather is clear.  If it is snowy or cloudy then it feels darker.  The days lengthen by 15 minutes each day – it is a really exciting time of the year!

During the polar nights we have a great chance to experience the breath-taking luminous green bands of light that flicker and roll across the sky.  From the cottage the view along the river valley is dark and ideal for watching the Northern Lights. For a completely dark sky, we simply take a 10 minute walk to the edge of the village and marvel at the stars and aurora.  Sometimes the lights can be seen several times during an evening.

Spaces for this special Art Safari are limited.  The cottage sleeps 6 people in 4 bedrooms, guests share the bathroom with shower and under-floor heating.   There’s a cosy living room with imitation wood stove, sofa, arm chairs and panoramic  views of the sea and mountains.
