We paint in the Land of the Thunder Dragon, the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan.  Spectacular scenery awaits us, rugged Himalayan mountains with snow capped peaks, ancient monasteries, hilltop temples, rivers, forests of pine and cedar, fertile valleys and sacred lakes.

photoThis is a seldom visited country and we are privileged to be able to paint and sketch here. The rivers run clear and the air is drinkable, there is a whole new world to paint here.

We immerse ourselves in the Bhutanese lifestyle, culture and traditions, visiting Paro, Punakha, Trongsa and staying in a hilltop Palace in beautiful Bumthang.  Our sketchbooks will become journals, dotted with monasteries, brightly coloured prayer flags and splashes of ‘monks robe-red’.

The buildings are ornately decorated (even the petrol station!), high mountain passes are adorned with fluttering prayer flags and shaggy yaks graze by the roadside.  Water driven prayer wheels, flowering Magnolias, rhododendrons, patches of primula, birds and butterflies catch our eye as we journey slowly through this magnificent Himalayan kingdom.

The Buddhist faith permeates daily life, there is a reverence for the land and its well being.  Monks of all ages carry out their monastic duties while acrobatic monkeys navigate the rooftops overhead and puppies sleep peacefully in the sun. Festivals in Bhutan are a riot of colour and raw energy, barefoot dancers leap and twirl to drum beats, their faces concealed with masks.  IMAG0007
