Art Safari creative adventures ‘out of Africa’ to Cambodia

Temples, dance and rivers

26 November – 13 December 2020

With Mary-Anne Bartlett

Meet the gentle people of Cambodia – sketch the temples of Angkor Wat, floating villages, water birds, wooden pagodas, ornamental trees and palm trees at the beach.

Children skipping in CambodiaThis Art Safari delves into the culture, natural beauty, ancient and recent history and the circus and dance influences of Cambodia.

Throughout the tour we meet artists, dancers and acrobats and have the opportunity to share  ideas.

During this tour you will see some of the best parts of the country as we travel from Angkor Wat to Battambang, from Phnom Penh to Kep and into the jungle to stay on a slowly meandering river with fireflies flashing in the trees at night.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s ancient temple city, is one of the wonders of the oriental world.  We paint Ankgor’s decorative Ta Promh Temple Cambodia websitetemples, enjoying details and craftsmanship and the overgrown ruins of Southeast Asia’s greatest civilization.

Imagine sketching amongst the strangler figs and kapok trees which entwine the ruins of Ta Prohm, the perfect temple-in-the-jungle!  Almost untouched since it was discovered, this famous temple retains much of its mystery.  The skills and sensitivity with which the temples are being restored are extraordinary.

We sketch village life and endangered species such as storks, adjutants, pelicans and ibis as we visit a bird reserve and a floating village  on the Tonlé Sap Lake where thousands of water birds come each year.   The area consists of a vast undisturbed flooded forest.  As such, it is one of the most important places in South-East Asia for the conservation of endangered species such as storks, adjutants, pelicans and ibis.

Acrobats, trapeze artists, painters, dancers and musicians await us in Battambang and in Phnom Penh where we link with artists for a day at art and dance schools.

In Battambang we have the great opportunity to draw and be entertained by young adults training at the Battambang Circus School.  They are outstanding professional artists performing in Cambodia and all around the world with acrobatics, juggling, balancing, contortion, trapeze and clowning.

Our hosts treat us to sumptuous hotels in tropical gardens as well as beautiful milk and wheat-free Cambodian cuisine – though breakfasts can remain true to the French colonial influence of croissants, pancakes, tea and coffee!
