Views from the Cape

Cape Town

11 – 18 February 2017

With artist tutor Mary-Anne Bartlett

 Cape Town landscape 2015
‘This cape is the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth’ – From the journal of Sir Francis Drake, on seeing the Cape for the first time, 1580.

Cape Town Lighthouse 2015Travel with artist Mary-Anne Bartlett to the furthest south-west point of the African Continent.  Throw your thoughts out on the swirling winds while you paint in this spectacular and timeless place, with views out to the convergence of two oceans, as you look south the next land mass is Antarctica.

Sink your toes into the wonderful beaches of white sand. Pack your binoculars and scan the horizon for dolphins and whales. Enjoy a fresh Sauvignon Blanc in a vineyard.  Learn about the history of the Cape.  Paint the penguins at Boulders Beach and the stunning protea flowers in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The Cape of Good Hope reveals many treasures: staggering sunny views to the Atlantic and Pacific, fynbos flowers and plants, blesbok, ostriches, baboons, dassies, cormorants, robins, rock formations that look like Henry Moore sculptures and penguins.

Our itinerary takes us from Stellenbosch and the vineyards to Cape Point and to Camps Bay next to Cape Town.

Cape Town View of bay 2015This new itinerary is suitable for artists and photographers and is ideal as a pre-trip extension to our Namibia safari ‘A Dazzle of Zebras’.
Our sketching outings tackle townscapes and architecture, landscapes, seascapes, far reaching views, wildlife, flora, as well as urban life at the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, the historic working harbour.  Painting the view from Table Mountain is breath-taking – way below us Cape Town resembles tiny building blocks, with Robben Island far out in the glistening bay.
‘During the many years of incarceration on Robben Island, we often looked across Table Mountain at its magnificent silhouette … To us on Robben Island, Table Mountain was a beacon of hope. It represented the mainland to which we knew we would one day return’ – former President Nelson Mandela
Cape Town Harbour 2015Cosmopolitan Cape Town is a city of hope with a unique vibe, a melting pot of different cultures – a true rainbow nation.  It has plenty of galleries to absorb and stun us.
The Cape is a definitely a place for gourmet tastes, where we will discover delicious flavours and mouth watering aromas.  The winelands are on our doorstep, just a 45 minute drive from the city, regimented vineyards flanked  by mountains cast in deep blue shadows.
Our days will be filled with both art and exploration, our evenings will doubtless commence with a fragrant glass of South African wine watching the setting sun.
