“I’m so excited about this most beautiful painting holiday itinerary that takes us to Shangri La.  It will be my first time to paint in China and I am very much looking forward to experiencing this beautiful area with you,” Mary-Anne Bartlett

Calling adventure seeking artists to join artist Mary-Anne Bartlett in Yunnan Province for our first Art Safari to China!

This corner of old world China has so much to discover… Expect a wonderful diversity of people and landscapes; snow-capped mountains, verdant forests, vast lakes and mighty rivers, a profusion of flowers, charming towns and villages with authentic tea houses, elegant pagodas and pavilions, and rich variety of folk culture each with its own style of architecture, costumes, music, and local delicacies….

Our 15-night journey starts in provincial capital of Kunming and takes us north-west to Shangri-La in the foothills of the Himalayas. Along the way, we will stop at towns along the Ancient Tea Horse Road that were once part of a flourishing trade between Tibet, Burma and China. Much of our itinerary is focused on rural areas, travelling through the tranquil backcountry of Yunnan, where we will experience a China that is a world away from the hubbub of its major cities.

  • Discover Kunming; ‘City of Eternal Spring’ and sketch the picturesque bridges and pavilions of Green Lake Park and the graceful architecture of the Bamboo Temple with its 500 life-sized statues…
  • Visit the lakeside city of Dali with its Ming Dynasty-era Three Pagodas; explore local villages and paint colourful Bai folk houses
  • Experience rural Chinese life in the villages of Shaxi and Tacheng and capture scenes of daily life and the gentle surroundings of farmlands and meadows
  • Watch the golden sunrise over the wild and beautiful Meili Snow Mountain Range, and go wild painting flowers – alpine studded meadows, thickets of blooming azaleas and hillsides of rhododendrons…
  • Admire the mountain paradise of Shangri-la and the dazzling Tibetan architecture of Songzanlin Monastery
  • Try some of Yunnan’s best-known dishes such as ‘crossing the bridge noodles’ and yak butter tea!

We will be staying in a mixture of modern hotels, boutique lodges and smaller guest houses chosen for convenience of location, character or their spectacular setting.  All have good facilities – comfortable beds, en-suite western-style bathrooms, and most serve local as well as international food.

This Art Safari is moderately paced – we have tried to fit in many highlights, but also tried to balance this with some longer intensive painting periods.

A reasonable level of fitness is required for walking around historic towns many of which have cobbled streets and steep steps.

We have planned our trip to be nice and gentle so that we will be making a gradual ascent from Kunming (1900m) to Shangril-la (3400m) to allow for proper acclimatization and to enjoy (nearly) every flower along the way.
