Art Safari painting holiday and creative adventures in Egypt

Paint like an Egyptian

14 to 23 January 2019

with Jackie Garner

The artworks of ancient Egypt have captivated people for thousands of years, and what better place to appreciate their splendour than Luxor on this brand-new Art Safari. Set on the banks of the Nile and surrounded by a sun-baked landscape strewn with treasures, you’ll see and paint the layered history of the ancients – a jumble of sphinxes, forests of graceful columns, obelisks, ruined temples, vibrant tomb paintings and elaborate hieroglyphs.

Join Jackie Garner on this nine-night Art Safari to learn first-hand the methods and underlying meanings that the ancient Egyptians employed in their art. Jackie will tutor you in the use of scale, composition, pattern, guidelines, and texture as you create your own art based on the 6000 years of inspiration all around us! An expert local guide will accompany us throughout to help unlock the mysteries of Egypt’s splendid past…..

Painting highlights

  • Visit the extraordinary Karnak Temple complex where you’ll be spoilt for choice for sketching subjects.
  • Descend into the Valley of the Kings, the site of royal burials since around 2100 BC. With numerous richly decorated royal tombs there are many different styles of art to take in, some only used at this site.
  • Marvel at the beauty of Queen Nefertari, one of the most powerful women of ancient times, whose life and journey towards the afterlife are vividly portrayed in paintings still full of colour in her tomb – widely regarded as the most beautiful tomb in all of Egypt.
  • Discover the everyday life of 3000 years ago in the Tombs of the Nobles.
  • Journey through the desert to Abydos, the Great Temple of Sety I is celebrated for the delicacy and artistic refinement of its bas-reliefs, and continue on to Dendera the best preserved temple complex in Egypt. Along the way glimpse a rural life with little trace of the present – camels and water buffaloes wandering the roads, and men, women and children clad in flowing robes go about their daily tasks.

On this residential Art Safari, we stay at Jolie Ville Kings Hotel – located a short distance from Luxor on a private island in the Nile. The hotel’s setting is beautiful and peaceful with stunning views over the river and lush landscaped gardens, which are home to a good number of birds. The rooms are dotted around the grounds in large octagonal bungalows and are spacious with plenty of natural light and garden views. All the rooms have air conditioning and a private bathroom. There are three swimming pools, including an infinity pool overlooking the Nile. There is also a good choice of restaurants serving Egyptian, French and Italian cuisines.

Your tutor Jackie Garner has been painting wildlife and the natural world for over 30 years.  She originally trained at Medway College of Design, before becoming the part-time education officer at Gloucestershire’s Nature in Art. Jackie’s fascination with Egypt began when she was asked to illustrate a ground-breaking research project investigating how wildlife species were depicted in ancient Egyptian art. Jackie loves to share her enthusiasm and has given well-received presentations to Egyptology societies.
