This is an exciting, new two-week combination painting the Amalfi coast with its breathtakingly beautiful views and the incredible cultural treasures of Sicily.

We fly into Naples to begin the first week of our holiday painting in Amalfi, staying in Minori, a town at the heart of the Amalfi Coast.  Stretching along the serpentine edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most memorable destinations.  Here steep, craggy cliffs plunge into the sparkling Mediterranean and pastel-coloured villages spill down the mountainsides that are terraced with fragrant lemon groves.  Our sketchbooks fill with spectacular vistas, elegant villas and arbours laden with bright bougainvillaea, hillside churches in mix of architectural styles, and street scenes among the ancient alleyways and archways…

Our second week is spent painting in Sicily at a delightful Agriturismo (farm stay), surrounded by centuries-old olive trees.  Sicily is an island of contrasts – from fertile volcanic land, ancient and arid ruins to baroque-style architecture, it offers fresh inspiration for painters around every corner.  We explore the western side of the island, painting secluded inlets and coves, fishing villages, Greek temples, and shimmering slat pans dotted with windmills.

Italy’s southern tip also has some amazing culinary delights to savour – what could be better at the end of a blissful day’s painting!  Amalfi’s cuisine is full of fresh flavours, tomatoes, lemons and the sea on your plate – shrimps, redfish, bream, sea urchins, octopus, blue, mussels…  Further south, Sicilian food is a melting pot of flavours from Africa, Arabia and Spain with a vibrant street food scene too.

In between our painting stops, there is time to wander the cool stone streets of these historic towns, stopping at the little boutiques to admire the highly skilled local handicrafts – exquisite ceramics, chic linens, unusual jewellery and handmade paper…  perhaps with a side order of ‘caffé and cannoli’ or a mid-afternoon gelato!

Painting Highlights

  • Paint the vertiginous views of the Bay of Salerno from the enchanting hilltop setting of Ravello.
  • Capture Positano’s panorama of colours – the green mountains flanking the town, the steeply tiered pink, yellow and white houses and the azure blue of the sea.
  • Take a trip to the picturesque island of Capri and sketch its iconic Faraglioni (limestone stacks)
  • Explore the vast complex of ruins beside the Mediterranean, at Selinute, with Greek temples and buildings dating back to 5th century B.C.
  • Paint Trapani’s wonderful natural landscape with its chessboard of ancient salt pans, prominent windmills, gleaming piles of harvested salt and wooden fishing boats.
  • Discover the coastal town of Mazzara del Vallo with its labyrinth old Arab quarter or Casbah and other architectural gifts including fine examples of Sicilian Baroque.
