Flights of Angels

24 February  – 01 March 2019

With Mary-Anne Bartlett

“Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight” – Dr. David Livingstone

Paint under the full spray of the Victoria Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world!  The power and energy of the Zambezi River as it plunges over the edge of the kilometre-long falls is a truly spectacular sight.  The immense curtain of falling water forms a mist that rises almost 500 meters skywards and explains the meaning behind their local name – Mosi-oa-Tuna – which translates as ‘the smoke that thunders’.  At dawn, the light lifts up over the falls in steamy yellows, pinks and oranges, silhouetting the trees on the edge of the canyon, and as the sun rises its rays mingle with the spray to form dancing rainbows.

Upstream of the Falls, the Zambezi is tranquil, and its banks are dotted with palm trees and lush riverine forest, which shelter an array of wildlife from monkeys and small antelope like the beautiful bushbuck to larger species like giraffe and elephant.  In the river pods of hippos submerge and re-emerge, crocodiles sun themselves on the banks, and iridescent kingfishers perch on overhanging branches.  We will explore the surrounding unspoilt wilderness by boat, vehicle and on foot.

  • Sketch the glorious Victoria Falls in full flow
  • Paint hippos and crocodiles bathed in warm sunset hues on a luxury cruise on the Zambezi River
  • Take a walk in the bush with your sketchbook, accompanied by elephants
  • Lunch at the Look Out Café perched above the turbulent rapids below the Falls
  • Discover the wildlife of Zambezi National Park with top safari guide Charles Brightman

We will be staying at the elegant Victoria Falls Hotel, built in 1904 and popularly known as “the grand old lady of the Falls”. This Edwardian-style luxury hotel combines the charm of the old world with the convenience of the new and is set in lush tropical gardens with lily ponds, palm trees and semi-tropical shrubs, that provide an aura of tranquillity and privacy. From the gardens there are breath-taking views of the gorge, Victoria Falls Bridge and the spray from the Falls. The famous Victoria Falls themselves are just a ten-minute walk away using the hotel’s private pathway.
