Art Safari painting holidays and creative adventures in Zambia

large Grey and Unmistakable

25 Aug to 02 Sep 2019

with Mary-Anne Bartlett & John Threlfall

Sunsets and elephants – what could be better?!  Sketching from open vehicles we draw wildlife in South Luangwa National Park on our residential Art Safari in Zambia with a special focus on elephants: ‘large, grey and unmistakable’.

This extraordinary and beautiful wildlife area is a place to watch the world’s miracles of nature.  Luangwa is famous for its density and frequency of game.  We paint wonderful river landscapes, teaming dry lagoons and twisted trees full of birds.

Guided by expert safari guides and a spotter on night drives, we are sure to find everything we are looking for over our packed days of wildlife viewing, sketching and painting.

On morning and afternoon game drives, we sketch and paint elephants, lions, giraffe, antelope and zebra.  In rest times we relax and paint in our comfortable riverside lodge with elephant and other animals meandering through.

We find time to visit the local village and Tribal Textiles workshop, making us part of the community that makes up Mfuwe and South Luangwa.

This Art Safari is ideal for people who are mad about wildlife and painting!

We stay in our own lodge, Thornicroft Lodge, which was built by Art Safari director Mary-Anne Bartlett and seven other Africa colleagues in 2008. This is a friendly, simple and comfortable lodge that is situated just outside South Luangwa National Park on the banks of the Luangwa River. The chalets have fabulous views over the river and there is always something happening at the water’s edge – whether it is hippos and crocodiles lazing around, or elephants coming to drink! Wildlife can also wander freely through the lodge at any time of day, so there is always some action to be sketched and drawn somewhere in camp…

Your Tutor Mary-Anne Bartlett is the Founder/Director of Art Safari and has led more than 100 Art Safari tours worldwide – from the Arctic to Antarctic.  As a full time travel artist Mary-Anne has a wealth of cultural and artistic experience and techniques to share, enthusiasm for the natural world and extensive wildlife knowledge. She will provide one-to-one tuition time and demonstrations, working from life, and capturing the moment. Just like the early explorers her sketch-books are pictorial travel journals that express the essence of a place in a way that photographs cannot.

Your Tutor John Threlfall first met Mary-Anne at the RSPB Bird Fair at Rutland Water and they have painted alongside each other in Scotland and Zambia.  An SWLA member and totally in love with nature, especially birds, John is a thoughtful tutor as well as excellent company on long journeys.  You may be very relaxed and involved in deep conversation, but he will always be alert to the wildlife around you.  His work can be seen in UK galleries and at his website.
