Islay – Queen of the Hebrides

 4 – 10 June 2017

with John Threlfall

Wildlife artist and author John Threlfall is leading our second Art Safari to the Isle of Islay, the southern most island of the Inner Hebrides.

Islay 2015

Threlfall seagullsJohn is passionate about wildlife and spends as much time drawing and painting directly from nature as he can, in the studio he works from his field sketches in acrylic, oil or pastel.  John will tutor the Art Safari with demonstrations, exercises and one-to-one tuition time.

Islay offers 130 miles of rugged coastline to explore.  Sand and shingle beaches, cliffs and mudflats, lochs and moors support a wide variety of wildlife, with more than two hundred different species of birds and colonies of seals.

Stretch by John ThrelfallVillages nestle into the landscape, red, roe and fallow deer roam the wide expanses of heather covered moorland.

Islay is famous worldwide for its single malt whiskey, with 8 working whisky distilleries.  After a fulfilling day of painting and exploration what could be better than sampling a ‘wee dram’ as the sunsets!

We are basing our tour in the small settlement of Kilchoman on the west coast of Isaly.

Kilchoman House is a Georgian House built in 1825, surrounded by 37 acres of sheltered farmland.  A burn runs through the garden which attracts a great many birds, it is a tranquil place for sketching and offers us ample ‘studio space’.

Kilchoman HouseWe are staying at Kilchoman House on a self-catering basis and food is not included in the tour cost. We will have communal breakfasts at the house and take picnics or stop for cafe lunches during our painting excursions.  There are lovely places to eat out in the evenings in Port Charlotte (8.4 miles) and in Bowmore (12.2 miles).

John will work closely with the RSPB on the Island, to ensure we make the most of sketching and painting opportunities.

The joining point is Kilchoman House on Saturday 3 June 2017.
