Art Safari painting holidays & creative adventures – New York

New York title

New York, New York

1 – 6 May 2017

with James Willis

It’s springtime in New York and time for an artistic citybreak across the Atlantic in the city that never sleeps tutored by Art Safari’s James Willis

There are urban sketching opportunities between fascinating visits to New York museums and galleries – you will come back with a sketchbook full of images, memories, notes and you will have time to paint some spectacular city views.

NYC Guggenheim

NYC masts and skyscrapersNew York gives plenty of subject matter from architecture, soaring skylines, the bustle of the waterfront – we hope you feel inspired to paint reflections of this cultural melting pot.

James Willis will share his knowledge and passion for art history as you visit exhibitions and permanent collections around the city, as our tour may well include visits to The Metropolitan, The MOMA, the Frick, the Whitney, the Neue Gallery and the Guggenheim.  Some of the most famous paintings in the world are on view in New York, and you will be able to while away the hours looking at paintings from all eras, fascinating ancient and modern sculpture, photography and design, gorgeous jewellery and exquisite porcelains.  We will take this opportunity to see paintings by American artists – Sargent, Homer and Eakins and hope to re-visit the Salmagundi Club, founded in 1871 it is one of the oldest (and we think must be the most welcoming!) art organisations in the USA. In 2017 Salmagundians will be celebrating 100 years at their brownstone mansion on 47 Fifth Avenue.

We base ourselves in Mid-Town where there’s so much awaiting our discovery, meander along wide sidewalks flanked with yellow taxis – Times Square, Broadway,Grand Central Station and Bryant Park are all within easy reach.  We will sketch some iconic views; a boat trip on the Hudson River takes us close to Liberty Island, drifting along we can appreciate the sheer scale of this towering metropolis in silhouette and you could choose to go up the Empire State Building or the Chrylser, or just enjoy a cocktail at the Marriott in Times Square for birds-eye panoramas.Liberty 2016 cropped
