Art Safari is pleased to invite artists of all standards to join an exhilarating new 12 day painting holiday with artist Mary-Anne Bartlett to Papua New Guinea. Mixing colour, tradition, wildlife and culture the new Birds & People of Paradise Art Safari tour promises an undiscovered world where you will be able to sketch and paint some of the wonders of this most fascinating Oceanian country, one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

This is the expedition for adventurous artists, ready for an explosion of colour!   We have planned this trip to have only short amounts of walking.

Mary-Anne Bartlett will work closely with our knowledgeable local guide to understand the ever changing habitats and eco-systems, exotic birds and wildlife, to get a feel for the lifestyles and history of the indigenous people we encounter.

Artists are invited to join the group to explore this wild landscape of volcanic mountains, rainforest, jungle, rolling foothills, waterfalls, coastal low lands, mangroves, palm fringed beaches and coral reefs. PNG has over 600 islands and 800 indigenous languages!

This varied habitat supports dazzling rainforest birds and colourful butterflies. Papua New Guinea is particularly famous for its endemic birds of paradise which the Art Safari group hope to find and spend time finding and sketching. There are more species of parrots, kingfishers and pigeons to be found here than anywhere else on the planet, making for fantastic painting opportunities.

Our first painting days are in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea where the views are spectacular and alpine forests are home to exotic birds of Paradise.  We will acclimatise to our new surroundings, visiting the proud Huli people, recognisable for their elaborate flower adorned wigs.

At times we choose to journey by river through dense tropical jungle, drifting along Karawari River, sketching the wildlife, habitiat and the local people poling their dug-out canoes and crocodiles lazing on the riverbanks.  We will be privileged to paint scenes of traditional life in small lost in the jungle villages, where ancient ancestors would still recognise the pattern of everyday life.

Lowland, rainforest and freshwater birds with iridescent plumage will glide through the pages of our sketchbooks on this Art Safari expedition – Buff-Banded Rail, Long tailed Shrike, Pied Chat, Orange-crowned Fairy-wren, Mountain Peltops, Friendly Fantail, Willie Wagtail, Blue-grey Robin, the Hooded Manikin, Lorikeets, Eclectus, Palm Cockatoos, Edwards-Fig Parrot, birds of paradise – the King, Twelve-Wire and the Magnificent Riflebird- Cassowaries, frog-mouths, owls, birds of prey, bower birds, and honey eaters –  the list goes on and on.

To make the most of our time in this vast country we will take sPapua New Guineacenic internal flights over rugged landscapes, dense tropical jungle and mountains.

To see such an ancient place with an artists eye is totally absorbing, sketchbooks transform into colourful travel journals, the climate will dictate the way our watercolours behave.  Our pictures will be pure and earthy, without the encroachment, noise and confusion of modern day life.

Our itinerary includes:

  • 2 nights in Port Moresby at Airways Hotel
  • 3 nights in the Tari Valley, home of the Huli people, at Ambua Lodge
  • 2 nights overlooking Karawari’s dense tropical jungle & wildlife at Karawari Lodge
