Impressions of the Camargue

09 to 15 May 2019

with Vincent Desplanches

Join Art Safari with urban sketcher and artist tutor Vincent Desplanche in the South of France, sketching and painting in the beautiful light of Provence.

We are based close to the busy Roman city of Arles, with its Amphitheatre, Church of St Trophime and The Café Terrace on Place du Forum, painted by Van Gogh in 1888.

The lagoons and marshes of the wild flat Camargue are invitingly on our doorstep.  Here we may paint the flamingos of Western Europe’s largest river delta and see the Grand Rhône and Petit Rhône flow into sparkling Mediterranean Sea.  The Camargue’s vast plain is comprised of large salt lagoons or étangs, cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes.  White horses roam here, flamingos feed in the lagoons and herds of majestic black bulls graze on salty coastal meadows.

We will spend time painting and sketching in Arles; the Amphitheatre is a vast stone canvas for the play of light and long blue shadows, and the Saturday Market on Boulevard des Lices is a feast for the eyes (and nose!).  Stalls bow under the weight of huge cheeses, charcuterie and locally grown produce.  Sketch shoppers as they browse the glossy olives, lavender, locally made soaps, herbs and spices.

We will also visit the charming village of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, with its narrow cobblestone streets, colourful shutters, shaded squares and fountains.  Van Gogh painted many memorable images of the Alpilles Mountains which surround the town when he stayed here, including ‘Starry Night’.

We will be staying at a peaceful, small hotel located within easy reach of Arles.  The Auberge du Mas de la Fenière is a converted 19th century farmhouse and is surrounded by wildflower meadows and fields with horses.  The rooms are simple but comfortable and each has a private bathroom.  They are all uniquely decorated with furniture typical of the region.  The Auberge has its own restaurant, which serves traditional cuisine using fresh local produce.  Meals are served on the delightful stone terrace shaded by a canopy of mulberry trees.  In the grounds are two small swimming pools which are perfect for a refreshing dip at the end of a hot day exploring this diverse and charming area of France.
