Paddling & painting

28 June to 03 July 2019

with Claudia Myatt

‘A Sketchbook is where you grow ideas.  It is your brain’s playground, a visual diary, the colourful, imperfect trace of your life.  It’s a place where no-one (especially you) can judge what goes on.  It’s a liberating habit to get into.’ Claudia Myatt

Our island days on this delicious ‘Paddling and Painting’ Art Safari on the Isles of Scilly settle into the rhythm of the ebb and flow of the tide as we sketch and explore.  We meander over our own island (St Mary’s) and travel by boat to neighbouring islands and islets to sketch and paint stunning scenery and wildlife, seabird colonies and seals.

Classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of five inhabited Islands; St. Mary’s, Tresco, St. Martin’s,Bryher and St. Agnes, and around 140 rocky islets lying 28 miles from the Cornish coast with a temperate Oceanic climate.  The Duchy of Cornwall owns most of the freehold land on the Islands.

This is Claudia’s second Art Safari to the Scilly Isles, and she knows the Islands well having sailed and painted here many times.

Creating a sketchbook diary as you go, the format of the tour will be exploring and sketching the islands, using watercolours, pens and pencils as you gather inspiration for paintings.

Claudia will encourage you to engage deeply with your surroundings, exploring shapes, textures and colours, taking in details with an artist’s eye, painting the sea and sky, mixing colours, tackling the movement of waves and watery reflections.

On Tresco we take a sketching walk, spending time at the sub-tropical Abbey Garden.  The Valhalla Museum collection here of thirty shipwrecked figureheads is a poignant reminder of the 500 skeleton wrecks dotted around these rocky shores, an interesting and sheltered subject should we have a rainy day!

St Martins is only a mile and a half long, the island is criss-crossed with footpaths skirting white sandy beaches and meandering through heath land to secluded rocky coves. Sketch the coastline, far-reaching views across to the other islands, and old stone houses with their colourful gardens.  We may decide to picnic here at the appropriately named ‘Wine Cove’ or ‘Bread & Cheese Cove’…

This Art Safari is based at Longstone Lodge which is situated in the centre of St. Mary’s, the main island.  The Lodge opened in May 2018 and offers us very comfortable Hostel style accommodation.  The Lodge is 2km from Hugh Town and a 15-20 minute walk or a 5 minute drive.  On this Art Safari we will have a self-service breakfast selection at the Lodge and take picnics or eat at cafes during painting excursions.  In the evenings we can go to Hugh Town for pub suppers or enjoy a takeaway supper at the Lodge.

Travel to the Isles of Scilly from the UK is very straight forward and the journey to the Islands is very much part of this adventure with some beautiful scenery.  Flights and ferries can be booked through Isles of Scilly Travel www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk  Tel:  01736 334220.

Please note that this holiday will involve walking, getting on and off boats, negotiating steep stone steps on quaysides and perhaps the occasional paddle if we land on beaches.  The day-by-day itinerary will be flexible and will depend upon the weather and the tides/sailing times of inter-island ferries.
