Mary-Anne and Julia are leading a group of intrepid sketchers to Marwell Zoo, where you’ll spend the whole day sketching from life!

Due to the popularity of this day, Julia Cassels is now going to join Mary-Anne so that you can learn from both artists about their field-sketching method.  We will be a big group on the Saturday.  Please email if you would like to join MA on the Sunday too!

Bring your sketchbooks with you and get ready to fill them with creatures both big and small. If you’ve been to our FREE speed-sketching on Thursday nights, then you’ll already be used to drawing quickly and fiercely from still images. Now’s your chance to practice on the real thing.  Capturing movement is a great skill to have in your repertoire, and you will find that your work becomes livelier with more practice.  With Mary-Anne’s tuition, your work will improve rapidly and you’ll discover lots of new, exciting ways to create shapes, tone and texture.

The group will visit lots of different animals and enclosures based on Mary-Anne’s recommendations (and your requests).  As an expert on painting in the wild she will know the perfect animals to focus on to lead you through this intense day of learning. You are welcome to come and go as you please or stay a little longer in certain areas, but for the best experience we recommend sticking together as an Art Safari group. This day will be all about learning new skills, meeting new people and discovering more about animals of the wild!

You might want to stay at the Marwell Hotel and your overnight stay can include zoo entrance.

Suggested materials (only as much as you can carry easily)

• A3 sketchbook
• Soft drawing pencils and water soluble pencils
• Watercolours
• Waterbrushes or a selection of watercolour sketching brushes & a water pot
• Warm layers and wind-proofs
• A stool to sit on
