Learn to see edges, light and shadow, shapes and relationships between objects

Sometimes still life (ie flowers, fruit etc) is considered a boring part in practising art, much like practising scales of a piano. We often opt for an exciting subject matter instead, such as a professionally shot photograph or a landscape photo we’ve snapped along the way. Unfortunately, this type of drawing doesn’t enable us to engage with observation in a way that really challenges us to see, the foundation of a great drawing!

In this full-day workshop we will explore the components that make for a great drawing. Lorna will show you how to set up a still life and the importance of lighting and choosing objects. By studying a simple still life you will gain understanding of edges, light and shadow, seeing shapes and relationships between objects.

You will make a tonal guide and will have the opportunity to use graphite, charcoal, charcoal powder, and will use erasers only as a drawing tool not for removing mistakes!

The aim of the course is to develop your ability to see better and improve your confidence in drawing skills so that you can practise drawing for yourself with various subject matters.

This workshop is suitable for beginners or the more seasoned artist as these principles are the core practice for all professional artists.

A full list of recommended equipment will be provided nearer the time, however you are certain to need paper, pencils and lots of enthusiasm!
