Join us as we take a relaxed, methodical approach to this versatile traditional painting medium. Suitable for painters of all abilities.

There are many ways to use oil paint, in this workshop we will learn how to apply, control and enjoy the paint straight from the tube with no solvent or medium added. We’ll make a painting using the ‘alla prima’ approach – meaning we’ll complete a painting in a single session.  We will study the paints themselves, the surfaces available, brushes, mediums and the methods for which they are designed.

Aimed at dispelling the many myths and misconceptions about using oils, this workshop is ideal for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of how they work and how to get the best from this magical medium!

Images to paint from will be supplied after booking.

The workshop will also be recorded so you will be able to watch the video online afterwards.

  • A laptop, Macbook, PC, iPad or tablet
  • Sketchbook/notebook and pen (there’s LOTS of ideas and stuff to write down!)
  • Participants should use whatever oil painting equipment and brushes they already have and if possible, an easel or table easel.
  • The colours Vicki will use are Titanium white, cadmium yellow lemon, Indian yellow red shade, transparent oxide yellow (or yellow ochre) cadmium red light, alizarin claret, ultramarine blue (or cobalt blue) and phthalocyanine blue in Michael Harding Oil paints. These colours can be orders from Vicki in advance via  It is not essential that you use the same colours, just use what colours you have available!
  • Vicki will be using Rosemary and Co ultimate bristle chunking hog hair brushes in various sizes and shapes, mostly a size 8 flat, a size 1 round and a size 5 flat.  It may also be helpful to have a large soft brush for blending.  A basic set of oil brushes is available via Vicki’s website shop  It is not necessary to have the same brushes as Vicki, you’ll just need a variety of fairly stiff hog brushes – synthetic brushes for acrylic painting are usually too soft for use in this workshop.
  • Use any palette knife you like the shape of.
  • Everybody will need a suitable surface on which to make their painting, either a canvas or a canvas board.  Vicki will work at around 8×8” (20 x 20cm) but anything from 6×6” (15 x 15cm) to 16 x 16” (40 x 40cm) is fine, just use what feels comfortable for the size of brushes you have.
  • Please note – PAINTING SURFACES MUST BE CORRECTLY PRIMED FOR OIL PAINTS – unfortunately the ones from The Works and the ‘Crimson Blake’ brand don’t work at all because they are far too absorbent and will make the paints feel dry and impossible to blend.  Very rough surfaces also make it difficult to achieve a full range of effects.  Try to opt for a fairly smooth canvas texture or board – a medium or fine grain linen or canvas will be ideal.  Stick to well established brands – Windsor and Newton, Daler Rowney, Loxley, Clairfontaine, Belle Arti and Jackson’s Art own brand are all good.
  • If you have a variety of surfaces available you may like to experiment with them during the workshop to see how the paint handling differs from one to another.
  • A roll of kitchen towel or old cotton rags and a receptacle used towel is essential.  Baby wipes are also handy for cleaning up!
  • There’s absolutely no need for big jars of turps, white spirit, gamsol or sansodor. This will be a ‘solvent free’ workshop and I will show you how to clean your brushes beautifully with just soap at the end of the day.
